Isnello: Church Art, Textile Tradition and Geology
Accommodation in Isnello
Isnello can be explored through several clearly distinct themes: astronomy, geological landscapes, textile crafts and church art. If you choose a destination based on your interests, this variety offers a practical guide. An astronomical centre, historic churches, a museum of textile tradition and a geological trail provide different starting points for planning your trip. This lets you decide in advance whether you would rather focus on art history, crafts, the sky or the landscape.
Astronomy and geological landscapes
GAL Hassin is an astronomical centre in Isnello. The skies above Isnello are also considered suitable for astronomical observation. Together, the centre and the skies make astronomy a clearly defined focus. This thematic approach differs from the town’s history and works of art: it turns the gaze to the cosmos, while other aspects of Isnello tell stories of sacred art, architecture or textile crafts.
The Sentiero Geologico Urbano Isnello runs through the historic centre and on to the Gola d’Isnello. It was created to make the Gola accessible as a geosite. It is an important example of a geological feature formed by river incision. Put simply, it is a landform created as a river cut down into the ground. The trail thus brings together two perspectives: the historic centre and a specific geological theme. If you are interested in landforms and how they develop, this trail offers a different thematic approach from church art or textile crafts.
Churches, art and local history
The churches in Isnello showcase a wide range of building periods and works of art. The Chiesa Madre dates from the 15th century. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore dates back to the late 14th century; it houses a marble sculpture of the Virgin Mary from 1547, attributed to the Sicilian school. The Chiesa di San Michele was probably built between 1300 and 1400 and has a finely painted wooden coffered ceiling from the 17th century. Santa Maria Maggiore and San Michele thus bring historic building dates together with later-dated works of art.
The Chiesa dell’Annunziata houses a marble statue of the Annunciation and the Archangel Gabriel from the Gagini school, an organ dating from 1765, and a painting of the Nativity attributed to Zoppo di Gangi. Sculpture, organ and painting give this church a range of artistic connections.
The Chiesa del Rosario adds historical and textile connections to the overview. It formerly belonged to Dominican monks and was added to the palace of the Princes of Isnello towards the end of the 16th century. The church contains a 16th-century painting by the Flemish artist Simone de Wobreck, as well as a liturgical vestment embroidered with gold, silk and coral. Alongside painting, liturgical textiles are among the works of art associated with Isnello’s churches.
The Castello di Isnello also reflects different historical dates. The defensive citadel is probably from the High Middle Ages and has a double ring of walls. Its origins are probably Byzantine or Arab; it was refounded in the first half of the 12th century. The probable dating of its origins and the dated refoundation represent different parts of its history.
Textile tradition and visitor information
The Museo Trame di Filo displays traditional prototypes and original creations associated with the tradition of sacred weaving and textile furnishings for the home. The museum still uses the old techniques of Filet or Modano, as well as Sfilato, which dates back to the 15th century. The works on display and the continued use of these techniques offer two ways to explore textile crafts: they showcase both traditional forms and original creations, as well as techniques still practised at the museum. Isnello’s tourist information office is also located in the Museo Trame di Filo.
Religious tradition
During Isnello’s Good Friday procession, the final three scenes of the sacred Casazza representation are performed again. This connects the procession with a specific form of religious representation. Together with the churches and the Museo Trame di Filo, this custom adds to the picture of a place whose cultural themes include works of art and crafts, as well as religious traditions.
