Gratteri combines trails through the landscape with local and church history. There are different themes to choose from when planning your trip: the trail to the ruins of San Giorgio Abbey, access to Grotta Grattara, and churches, art and local traditions. If you are looking for hotels in Gratteri, these highlights can help you decide on the purpose and focus of your trip.

Landscape and Townscape

The municipality of Gratteri lies in the northern part of Parco delle Madonie. About 2,600 hectares of the municipal area are within the park boundary. In the town center, laid out like an amphitheater, panoramic views stretch from the Gulf of CefalĂą to the Gulf of Palermo. The sweeping views and location in the Madonie area give you different geographical points of reference for planning your trip.

Trails to the Abbey and Grotto

For a hike with a historical destination, the trail to the ruins of San Giorgio Abbey starts in the upper part of Gratteri, near the castle ruins. It passes through oak forests to the abbey ruins. Grotta Grattara is a different destination: it lies about 300 m from the settlement of Gratteri, on the lower slopes of Pizzo di Pilo, at an altitude of over 1,000 m. From the San Nicola plateau, a winding, fairly easy-to-walk trail leads through a pine forest to the grotto. Trail conditions can vary depending on the season; check current conditions before your visit. The trails differ from the outset in both their starting points and woodland surroundings: one route goes from the upper town through oak forest to ruins, while the other leads from the San Nicola plateau through pine forest to the grotto.

Abbey, Churches and Art

San Giorgio Abbey was founded in 1140 by Duke Ruggero. Its ruins attest to the only settlement of the Premonstratensian Order of the Reformed Augustinians in Sicily. This site therefore offers insight both into a specific foundation story and into the history of the order on the island. The Church of Sant’Andrea houses an Ecce Homo attributed to Frà Umile da Petraia. The Madrice Vecchia dates from 1350; its bell tower houses seven bells. The Church of Santa Maria del Gesù is also a very old church in Gratteri. The history can thus be explored from different perspectives: through the abbey ruins, the attributed Ecce Homo and the architectural history of the churches.

Local Traditions and Events

Grotta Grattara is also connected with a local tradition: in popular belief, it is associated with the Befana, known here as “a vecchia strina.” Gratteri’s Good Friday procession is called “a Sulità.” It winds through the town in a single-file line, with torches or lanterns. The Sagra della “Vastedda fritta” is one of the events associated with August in Gratteri. The procession and the Sagra offer different points of interest for a trip: religious tradition on Good Friday and an event in August. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the specific program for your chosen year in advance.
