Castelbuono is a medieval village in the Parco delle Madonie. When planning your trip, you can focus on culture, trails or events: Castello dei Ventimiglia is home to the Museo Civico, the Via dei Frati includes a stage starting in the village, and the Ypsigrock Festival takes place every year.

Castello dei Ventimiglia and the Museo Civico

The Museo Civico is located in Castello dei Ventimiglia, in the heart of the historic centre. The castle is also the cultural centre of this Madonie village. Its cube-shaped form is associated with Arab architecture. Other features include four square corner towers and battlements in the Norman style; a cylindrical tower is attributed to Hohenstaufen military architecture. These different stylistic influences offer an architectural focus alongside the castle’s cultural role. You can book guided tours of the Museo Civico through Pro Loco Castelbuono. They are led by experienced members with deep local roots.

Collections and local culture

The Museo Naturalistico Francesco MinĂ  Palumbo offers a different thematic focus. Its collections cover flora, fauna, geology, prehistory and industrial archaeology. It also houses several collections donated by other naturalists. The thematic approaches therefore differ: the Museo Civico focuses on the castle and its cultural role, while the Museo Naturalistico brings together a broad range of natural history and historical subjects. If you are planning a day devoted to culture, architectural history and the different collection areas can cater to two distinct interests.

Ypsigrock and trip planning

The Ypsigrock Festival takes place every year in Castelbuono. This four-day event brings participants together with the Castelbuono community. The main stage is in Piazza Castello, where international artists perform in a natural amphitheatre. If you want the festival to determine your travel dates, check the current event dates in advance. This lets you plan around the specific dates without assuming that a recurring event takes place on any particular date.

Via dei Frati and other trails

The Via dei Frati stage begins in Piazza Margherita in Castelbuono, follows Via Isnello downhill and reaches the S.P. 9. The Castelbuono–Cefalù stage includes Castelbuono, Isnello, the Santuario Gibilmanna and Cefalù. When choosing your route, it is useful to distinguish between the specific section starting in Piazza Margherita and the wider Castelbuono–Cefalù stage: the former describes the route as far as the S.P. 9, while the latter includes several named places. The Sentiero degli Agrifogli giganti di Piano Pomo is easily accessible from Piano Sempria-Castelbuono. Its starting point therefore differs from that of the Via dei Frati stage, which begins in Piazza Margherita.

Getting to Castelbuono

By car, Castelbuono is accessible via the A20 Palermo–Messina motorway and the Pollina-Castelbuono exit. From there, a direct route leads to the town centre. You can travel to Castelbuono from Cefalù railway station. Regular bus services operated by Sais Trasporti and AST run to Palermo and the main towns of the Madonie. As timetables and connections can change, check the latest schedules for your chosen route before setting off.

Manna from local ash trees

Manna is another of Castelbuono’s local specialties: it is obtained from local ash trees and used as a sweetener, as well as for detoxification and in medicine and cosmetics. Alongside architecture, museums and trails, this locally produced ingredient offers another point of interest when planning your trip.
