Acireale combines a historic center shaped by the Baroque period with a long history of libraries and art. It is also home to La Timpa, a nature reserve shaped by geology, the Chiazzette path to the coast, Carnival, and the Nivarata Experience. If you’re looking for a hotel in Acireale, these cultural and scenic highlights can provide a starting point for planning your trip.

Architecture and sacred art

The historic center is set amid Baroque scenery between the cathedral, the Duomo, and Corso Umberto. The monuments around Piazza del Duomo make the square an authentic open-air museum. The Basilica Collegiata di San Sebastiano is designated a national monument and contains frescoes by Pietro Paolo Vasta, created between 1732 and 1736.

The 18th-century Nativity scene is located in a natural lava-flow cave inside the church of Santa Maria della Neve. It comprises 34 life-size figures made of wax and wood. The frescoes and Nativity scene represent different forms of sacred art: painting on the one hand, and a richly populated tableau on the other. The setting and materials shape the impression made by the Nativity scene, while the artist and period of creation shape that of the frescoes.

Zelantea Library and Picture Gallery

The Zelantea Library was founded in 1671 and preserves around 100,000 books, including an old collection of 56,000 volumes and more than 1,000 manuscripts. The picture gallery attached to the library displays works attributed to the schools of Rubens, Titian, and Pietro Novelli. The total number of books and the volume count of the old collection give an impression of the collection on two levels. For your trip planning, this offers a different focus from the sacred buildings: here, books, manuscripts, and works of art shape Acireale’s cultural character. Access to the Biblioteca Comunale Zelantea is made easier by ramps and elevators. If you rely on ramps or elevators, check current accessibility before your visit.

La Timpa and the Chiazzette path

The La Timpa nature reserve covers 265 hectares and lies entirely within the municipality of Acireale. The natural escarpment was formed by movements along the Acireale fault; it exposes lava layers approximately 200,000 years old. The Chiazzette path descends from the Acireale plateau to the coast through seven hairpin turns, covering a difference in elevation of 150 meters. The two natural attractions can be understood at different scales: La Timpa through the area and geology of the reserve, and the Chiazzette through its route and elevation change.

Carnival and granita

The Nivarata Experience includes excursions to the snow pits of Mount Etna, as well as demonstrations and the traditional craft preparation of granita. It brings together landscape excursions and traditional craftsmanship; availability of the experience may vary. During the Acireale Carnival, allegorical and grotesque floats, flower floats, and masked groups parade through the streets of the town center. Here, the focus is on the lively street festivities, unlike the buildings and collections that shape Acireale’s cultural history.
