Montedoro brings together sacred architectural heritage, everyday traditions, mining and astronomy. If you choose a destination based on your cultural interests, these themes can help guide you: they range from 17th-century church architecture and former crafts to digital planetarium projections.

Sacred Architecture and Everyday Life

Montedoro’s Chiesa Madre was built in 1645 by Mariano de Lucia. It was last restored in 1996, returning it to its original forms and colours. The construction and restoration mark two distinct stages in the church’s history.

The Casa Museo “I mestieri scomparsi” displays objects and photographs, as well as reconstructions of old workshops. These include a tailor’s shop, a barber’s shop and a carpenter’s workshop. The museum also commemorates vanished trades: blacksmith, knife grinder, town crier, manure collector, carter and storyteller. Alongside the reconstructed workshops, it highlights the occupations that were part of everyday working life in the past.

The Casa Museo “Come eravamo” is housed in an old building constructed in the first half of the 19th century. Here, the building itself provides the historical setting; at “I mestieri scomparsi”, by contrast, the focus is on reconstructed workspaces and the trades associated with them.

Religious Traditions and Social History

The Casa Museo “La novena e il presepe” presents the Christmas novena and nativity scene tradition. A different religious theme takes centre stage at the Casa Museo “La settimana santa”, where the “Laments of Good Friday” can be heard as a distinctive form of intangible cultural heritage. Together, the two houses explore different traditions of the religious year.

The Casa Museo “Latifondo e lotte contadine” is dedicated to the post-war peasant struggles. Their aims included a fairer distribution of agricultural produce, the redistribution of uncultivated or poorly managed land, and the breakup of feudal estates. This theme differs from the displays of religious customs: it turns the focus to land distribution and social conflict.

The Casa Museo “Grotta di Beniaminu – Il brigantaggio” is located in the so-called “Grutta di Beniaminu”, a cave on Monte Ottavio. Inscriptions, photographs, folk poems, small objects and copies of ransom letters convey the history of banditry. The cave served as a refuge for bandits between the 19th and 20th centuries.

Mining and Astronomy

The Museo della Zolfara “Angelo Petix” is at the entrance to Parco Urbano di Montedoro on Monte Ottavio, near the Nadurello Mine. It is Montedoro’s oldest and longest-operating mine. The permanent exhibition “Zolfare e zolfatari di Montedoro, civica raccolta di testimonianze etnostoriche” features photographs, reconstructions, minerals and mining tools. It brings into focus both records of working life and geological and technical objects.

The “Margherita Hack” Planetarium has a dome with a diameter of 7.0 metres and 50 seats. Its digital planetarium can also project full-dome films. The Montedoro Observatory is on Monte Ottavio, west of the built-up area. It houses an astronomical Newton-Cassegrain telescope with a 600-millimetre primary mirror. The planetarium and observatory offer different points of interest: the dome and projections define the former, while the telescope’s technical equipment defines the latter.

For planning your trip, you can think of Montedoro’s range of themes this way: the Casa Museos explore crafts, customs and social conflicts; the mining museum and astronomy offer further, distinct insights into local history and science. Use the theme that interests you most to help guide your stay.
