Riesi: Sulfur Mining, Churches and DOC Wines
Accommodation in Riesi
Riesi can be explored through several distinct cultural themes: the sulfur history of Trabia Tallarita, sacred art and architecture, Copper Age necropolises, and the “Riesi” DOC wine designation. The range therefore extends from industrial history to churches and archaeology, as well as a regional wine designation.
Sulfur Mining in Trabia Tallarita
The Trabia Tallarita museum complex is located on State Road 190, which connects Riesi and Sommatino. Around 1920, 12 percent of the world’s sulfur production was mined at Trabia Tallarita; 3,000 miners worked underground. The percentage places the site in the context of global production, while the number of miners focuses attention on underground work. The adjoining museum buildings house the permanent photo exhibition “Sulfaro e sulfatari,” about life in the mine. It supplements the production history with the perspective of working life.
Churches, Frescoes and Architecture
The Chiesa Maria Santissima del Rosario was completed in 1775. Its Baroque façade stands alongside an Arab-inspired bell tower with a dome. The completion year, façade, and tower offer specific historical and architectural reference points. At the Chiesa San Giuseppe, the focus is on a named work of art: the church is known for the fresco “Lo Sposalizio di Maria Vergine e Giuseppe.” The main altar in the Chiesa Maria Santissima della Catena features a sacred image of the Madonna della Catena. It is also a place of worship of importance to the local community. The three churches each have a distinct focus: the Rosario’s date and architecture, a fresco at San Giuseppe, and an altarpiece and role as a place of worship at Catena.
Religious Celebrations
Important religious celebrations take place at the Chiesa Maria Santissima della Catena. These include a festival in honor of the Madonna, which attracts many worshippers every year. This adds a recurring event in religious life to the altarpiece and the church’s role as a place of worship. If you would like to plan your trip around this festival, check the current date in advance.
Copper Age Necropolises
There are Copper Age necropolises in the Riesi area, in the Contrade of Costa di Mandorle, Porco Spino, Birrigiolo, and Strazzo. These four Contrade locate the archaeological remains within the area. The Copper Age takes us far back in time, before the history of sulfur mining and the dated churches. Prehistory thus complements the industrial and sacred themes with a much earlier time horizon.
“Riesi” DOC Wines
The production area for “Riesi” DOC wines covers the entire administrative territory. The designation includes the wine types “Riesi” rosso, “Riesi” Novello, “Riesi” rosato, “Riesi” bianco, “Riesi” spumante, “Riesi” vendemmia tardiva, “Riesi” superiore, and “Riesi” superiore riserva. The list therefore includes several different wine types under the same DOC designation. Its geographic scope covers the whole territory, unlike the individual churches and the museum complex.
