In Ribera, travel interests range from archaeological sites and churches to landscapes along the Verdura River and the coast of Seccagrande. When choosing where to stay, consider what interests you most: architecture and local history, nature or a seaside town. The sights offer concrete ideas to help you plan your trip and find a hotel in Ribera.

Castello Poggiodiana and the Anguilla Necropolis

Castello Poggiodiana stands on a rocky outcrop above the Verdura River valley. The Saracens built the fortress in the 9th century under the name Misilcassin. Parts of the outer walls and a square corner bastion remain; the 25-metre-high cylindrical tower is particularly striking. The surviving structures reveal both the site’s location and its former defensive layout.

The Anguilla necropolis takes you back to a much earlier period: it dates to the 13th century BC and was discovered in 1982 south of Ribera, in Contrada Anguilla. The tombs include artificially constructed rock-cut tombs and chamber tombs. Some have a dromos in front of them—a passageway between 1.5 and 5 metres long. Their size and type make the tombs unique in western Sicily. For travellers interested in archaeology, the castle and necropolis offer two distinct historical perspectives.

Museum, Churches and Art

The permanent Museo Etno-Antropologico is located in the Villa Comunale. Its origins date back to 1989, when the “Ribera Verde” association collected more than 4,000 objects relating to the area’s farming, pastoral and craft traditions. Traditional tools on display include wooden and iron ploughs, animal saddles, hoes and sickles used to harvest grain. The collection also includes tools for tying sheaves and cleaning freshly threshed grain. Opening hours are available on request.

Ribera’s churches also tell the story of different periods of construction. The Chiesa Immacolata was built in 1686. Work on the present-day Chiesa Madre began on 21 March 1751, and the church was completed in 1760. Its high altar features an oil painting of the Madonna del Rosario by Provenzani. Those focusing on churches and art will find both specific dates relating to the building’s history and a named work of art here.

Landscapes Along the Verdura and Nature on Monte Sara

The Gole del Lupo were carved by the Verdura River and lie among citrus and fruit orchards. From there, you can look out over the sea and the Seccagrande coastline. The gorge is near Castello Poggiodiana and can be reached from Ribera by car or on foot via paths from the Verdura valley. Check access before your visit so your plans reflect current conditions.

Many plant species grow on Monte Sara, including the native dwarf palm. The equipped area there includes a pine and eucalyptus forest, seating for 480 people, ten fireplaces and a bocce court. Monte Sara is also used for mountain biking. Nature lovers can combine a visit here with one to the Villa Comunale, although the two destinations offer different experiences: the park in Ribera is known for its rare plants, centuries-old trees and flower-lined walking paths.

Seccagrande and Ribera’s Festivals

Seccagrande is the seaside town within the municipality of Ribera, with beaches. Numerous cafés and restaurants line the Gagarin promenade, making it a good place to spend afternoons and evenings. The seaside town therefore offers a different focus for a stay than the castle, necropolis and churches.

The Presepe Vivente takes place every year at Christmas in the Villa Comunale. At the 2025 event, visitors could sample traditional specialities along the route, including olives, cheese, oranges, sweets, doughnuts, ricotta and wine. The programme also included demonstrations of traditional crafts such as carpentry, ceramics, shoemaking and blacksmithing. The Festa Patronale di San Nicola is a traditional religious and cultural festival featuring rites, processions and communal prayers. The event on 6 December 2025 also included food stalls serving Sicilian dishes and local products. If you want to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the dates for the relevant year.

Whether you choose Ribera for its architectural history, landscapes or coast, the places mentioned can help you decide what to focus on during your trip and then look for a hotel.
