Menfi: Coast, Culture and Wine
Accommodation in Menfi
Menfi can be explored through three main themes: the coast, its architectural history and its wine tradition. Around Menfi, vineyards, olive groves and hills shape the landscape, sloping down towards the Mediterranean. The coastal towns add their own natural features to this landscape. In the town, palazzi and churches tell the story of different eras, while DOC Menfi and recurring events put wine in the spotlight. These themes can offer different points of reference as you plan your trip.
Coast and landscape
The Riserva Naturale Foce del fiume Belice e dune limitrofe stretches for about five kilometres between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo di Menfi. Along the coast at Solette, there are low sandy coves and submerged rocks. Meadows of Mediterranean aquatic plants support biodiversity in the area. At Capparrina di Mare beach, loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) occasionally lay their eggs; egg-laying is seasonal.
Other stretches of coast also have distinctive features: Giache Bianche beach near Bertolino di Mare is characterised by white pebbles along the shoreline and a small pine grove. Porto Palo is an old, picturesque fishing village in the centre of a wide bay. The Porto Palo coastal watchtower was built on the promontory in 1583. These places showcase different sides of the coast, from natural areas to a historic structure.
The Pista Ciclabile di Menfi is open to non-motorised modes of transport, such as bicycles and electric vehicles. Check the specific usage rules before setting off.
Architectural history in Menfi
Palazzo Pignatelli was built in 1638 on the site of the former castle of Frederick II of Sicily. The building has two floors, with a total of twelve vaulted rooms. A necropolis dating from between 330 and 400 AD was discovered beneath the palazzo. Sixteen graves set into the ground, lined and covered with limestone slabs, were uncovered. The building’s history and archaeological finds give the site a historical depth that extends beyond the visible structure.
Another architectural highlight is Palazzo Ravidà, a Neoclassical sandstone building in the historic centre, built in the last quarter of the 18th century. Churches add to the picture of different architectural periods: Chiesa Madre preserves a 17th-century wooden crucifix covered in silver foil. Chiesa di San Giuseppe was built in 1715, and Chiesa del Collegio di Maria SS. Annunziata in the early 19th century. Chiesa del Purgatorio was built between 1739 and 1769; it was initially dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot and, since 1947, to Madonna della Consolazione. The different building materials, dates and dedications offer several concrete points of interest for those interested in cultural history.
Wine, visits and events
The entire administrative area of the municipality of Menfi falls within the geographically defined production area of DOC Menfi. The designation covers the wine types Bianco, Rosso, Rosato, Spumante bianco and Spumante rosato. Bianco and Rosso also have variants such as Vendemmia tardiva, Passito, Superiore and Riserva. The designations thus distinguish several wine types and variants within the same DOC.
Cantine Barbera offers visitor visits on weekdays. Visitors can observe the grape harvest or different stages of winemaking; agricultural work is seasonal. Palazzo Planeta houses the Enoteca della Strada del Vino delle Terre Sicane as well as cultural activities promoting wine and local specialities. If you plan a visit, check the current arrangements.
Inycon is a recurring event in Menfi dedicated to wine, food and Mediterranean culture. The Feast of Sant'Antonio di Padova also marks a specific date in the annual calendar: it takes place every year on 13 June. Its highlight is a religious procession through the historic centre. Traditional games, performances and tastings of local products, including wines from Menfi’s wineries, are also part of the festival; individual programme items may vary.
