In Montallegro, coastal landscapes, nature watching and cultural history can be explored as distinct travel themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Montallegro, it helps to first decide which focus you want to shape your trip. Bovo Marina represents the seaside resort, Laghetto Gorgo the LIPU Oasis, while Monte Suso and the Museo della Civiltà Contadina offer historical and cultural perspectives.

Coast, beach and water at Bovo Marina

Bovo Marina is Montallegro’s seaside resort. Its long beach has very fine sand; the coastal landscape also includes white cliffs, coastal dunes and a pine forest behind the beach. The calm, clear waters are suitable for snorkelling, swimming and stand-up paddleboarding (SUP). This gives you a choice of specific coastal themes: the beach, three water activities and different landscape features. The pine forest behind the beach is equipped for camping and picnics.

A scenic coastal trail follows the shore at Bovo Marina and leads to hidden coves that can only be reached on foot. In planning your trip, this outing differs from swimming, snorkelling and SUP: it combines walking along the shoreline with access to the coves.

Laghetto Gorgo and the LIPU Oasis

The Oasi LIPU Montallegro consists of Laghetto Gorgo, an artificial basin covering 25 hectares. LIPU manages the oasis. The lake is an important resting and nesting site for numerous bird species; its shores are also a place to observe the rare European pond turtle. The artificial basin and its role as a habitat describe two different aspects of the same place. This makes Laghetto Gorgo a different travel theme from the open seaside resort of Bovo Marina.

Monte Suso and the history of Montallegro

Montallegro’s first settlement was established on Monte Suso towards the end of the 16th century. The ruins are considered the only example in Sicily of a 16th-century settlement where the urban layout, religious and civic buildings, and different types of housing units are still clearly recognisable. One of Montallegro’s most important religious buildings is the 18th-century Chiesa Madre di San Leonardo. The settlement’s origins on Monte Suso and a later religious building can therefore be viewed as distinct historical reference points.

Museo della Civiltà Contadina

The Museo della Civiltà Contadina was founded in 1991 as part of a school project intended to preserve and enhance the memory of the area. More than 1,000 objects from traditional crafts are kept there. The collection is divided into three sections: farming life, the domestic environment and working life. Its most valuable piece is a hand-carved and painted Sicilian cart.

Planning your trip by focus

For your trip planning, you can organise your options around the experience you want: Bovo Marina brings together the beach, water activities and the walking trail to the coves. At Laghetto Gorgo, the wetlands and wildlife take centre stage. Monte Suso and the Chiesa Madre offer historical reference points, while the Museo della Civiltà Contadina highlights rural life and traditional crafts. If you are looking for a hotel in Montallegro, this comparison can help you decide on your trip’s focus first.
