Lampedusa offers more than a view of the sea: sandy beaches, protected habitats, paths through the coastal landscape and places with a history of their own all shape the island. As you plan your trip, you can consider whether you want to focus mainly on time at the beach, hikes and nature watching, or cultural visits.

Coastline and protected habitats

Lampedusa’s eastern and southeastern coasts are home to sandy beaches. Cala Greca is a very small bay with white sand; Porto N’Tone is a very small beach with fine white sand. On the southern side lies Cala Pulcino, where several caves can be visited. The coastal areas therefore offer variety within a small area: alongside small sandy coves, you can also explore caves.

Spiaggia dei Conigli lies within the Riserva Naturale Isola di Lampedusa, in the Special Area of Conservation ITA040002 and the Special Protection Area for Birds ITA040013. The Area Marina Protetta Isole Pelagie marine protected area also includes Lampedusa and protects diverse marine and coastal habitats. These include Posidonia oceanica seagrass meadows. Improvements and pedestrian-friendly landscaping are planned for the access path to Spiaggia dei Conigli. Check the latest access information before your visit.

Since 1990, Lampedusa Turtle Rescue has worked to care for and rehabilitate injured sea turtles. Together with the protected areas, this highlights a different side of the island from its beaches and coastline: the conservation of marine animals and habitats.

Trails, views and activities by the sea

The Riserva Naturale Isola di Lampedusa has trails where you can explore the coast and the valleys, and observe the flora and fauna. One trail starts at Cala Stretta, follows the coast for a stretch and offers views of the Vallone di Cala Galera. Another connects sections of old paths with former military tracks and opens up views of the Grotta Tabaccara. The trails are therefore described as having different routes: one follows the coast for a stretch, while the other links older path sections with former military tracks.

Hiking trails lead to the peaks of Monte Rosso and Monte Nero. If you’d rather explore Lampedusa by bicycle, you can ride around the island in a day. Allow three to four hours for a boat trip around Lampedusa; tours and schedules may vary by operator. Spiaggia della Guitgia is connected to the town by public transport. Check the latest services before travelling.

The island also offers a range of underwater activities: diving and snorkelling are associated with its clear water, varied seabeds and rich flora and fauna. The underwater statue Madonna del Mare can be reached on an easy dive at a depth of 14 metres. This specific dive site stands apart from the more general opportunities described for diving and snorkelling.

Culture, remembrance and island cuisine

At the Museo Archeologico delle Pelagie, a chronological route leads through four rooms. Exhibits include finds from a Roman fish-processing facility at Cala Salina. The museum thus combines a clear sequence of rooms with a specific archaeological context on Lampedusa.

Between Cala Spugne and Porto Vecchio, the Porta d’Europa commemorates people who died while trying to reach the coast by sea. Alongside nature and excursions, the monument offers a quiet moment of remembrance. A recurring tradition is the Festa di Maria Santissima di Porto Salvo, held every year on 22 September. The procession begins at the Santuario della Madonna di Porto Salvo and makes its way through the island’s streets.

Fish couscous is also part of the local character: on Lampedusa, shrimp, lobster and seafood are added to it. Together with the museum, festival and monument, this culinary speciality broadens the picture beyond the coastal landscape. You can plan your trip around your interests, whether they lie in nature watching, trails, the sea, history or local food culture.
