Discover Canicattì: Churches, Theatre and History
Accommodation in Canicattì
Canicattì brings together evidence from different periods: from an extensive late Roman settlement to churches and theatre history, as well as a library with a historic book collection, there are many cultural points of interest. Vito Soldano, a few kilometres east of the town, is the site of this late Roman settlement.
Archaeology, Churches and Architectural History
The Chiesa Madre di San Pancrazio di Antiochia tells a story of construction spanning several centuries. Work began in the first half of the 18th century and was considered complete around 1765. Ernesto Basile designed the present-day façade in 1901; it was raised in 1908. Its white, monumental appearance shapes the townscape. The church is in the Renaissance style, dedicated to Saint Pancras of Antioch and to the patron saint of Canicattì. On 8 December 1965, Bishop Giuseppe Petralia of Agrigento elevated it by decree to the status of Santuario del Sacro Cuore di Gesù.
The Chiesa di San Francesco and the Chiesa di San Giuseppe also offer tangible insights into local religious history. According to historians, San Francesco was built in 1554 on the foundations of an original oratory, with significant support from Baron G. Battista Bonanno. The crypt beneath the church served as an ossuary; it was uncovered and opened to the public in 1998 during renovations to the church floor. If you plan to visit, check in advance whether it is currently open to visitors. San Giuseppe was built in the 17th century and altered in the centuries that followed. It houses a wooden statue of Saint Joseph attributed to Bagnasco and an intricately crafted wooden coffered ceiling.
Pilgrimage, Churches and Annual Events
The Santuario della B. M. V. della Rocca is a destination for pilgrimages and tourist tours because of P. Gioacchino La Lomia. Historical mementos of the Capuchin friar and numerous votive offerings accompany pilgrims to his cell on the first floor. The Chiesa Santa Chiara has facilities for welcoming pilgrims and worshippers, including toilets, communal rooms, a very large conference hall, outdoor areas and parking.
Canicattì’s Holy Week traditions include the Friday before Holy Week, Holy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Specific programmes may vary from year to year. The Fiera del Rosario traditionally takes place on the third Sunday in October; check the date and programme for the year of your planned visit. The programme for the described edition of the Festa dell'uva Canicattì 2025 included live music, a cooking workshop, entertainment for children and other events. This information relates to that edition; check the relevant announcement for another date.
Theatre, Library and Views
The Teatro Sociale di Canicattì was built between 1889 and 1908 to designs by architect Ernesto Basile, on the site of a Carmelite monastery. The monastery was demolished after religious orders were dissolved in 1866. In 1927, the theatre welcomed Luigi Pirandello and his theatre company, who performed “Six Characters in Search of an Author” there. Despite architectural barriers, the building has a lift and a ramp. Confirm the specific arrangements before your trip.
The Biblioteca Comunale has around 20,465 volumes, a collection of newspapers, magazines and regularly published periodicals, as well as a small film collection. The holdings also include valuable older works from the 16th to the 19th century. The historic book collection comprises 1,031 volumes and is available for consultation; check the arrangements before your visit.
The Torre dell'orologio was built in 1932 on the site of an almost identical earlier tower. This older tower had stood since the town was founded; its clock once marked the community’s most significant events. The Arco di Don Cola is a viewpoint in the historic centre, with views of Canicattì and the western hills.
