Fiumenaro is a tourist coastal resort and seaside destination in Agrigento, and is one of the beaches along the city’s coast. The beach is characterized by golden sand. Fiumenaro lies at the mouth of the Naro River, an estuary of particular ecological and natural value.

Beach and Naro River Mouth

These are two distinct landscape features to consider when choosing a location: the beach and the river-mouth area. The golden sand describes the beach itself, while the ecological and natural significance relates to the river mouth. If you choose a coastal destination based on its landscape, Fiumenaro offers both a specific connection to the beach and the Naro as a named natural area. This lets you consider the beach and river mouth as distinct aspects of the coastal resort.

Cannatello: Settlement and Trade History

The archaeological site of Cannatello is a Middle Bronze Age settlement with extensive finds of Mycenaean pottery. The settlement consisted of square and round huts within a paved area. Its date and architectural form offer different ways of understanding the settlement’s history: the dating places Cannatello in its historical context, while the hut shapes and paved area provide specifics about the settlement’s layout. The pottery finds are a different type of evidence from the architectural features. Those interested in Cannatello can distinguish these aspects by period, finds, and settlement form. The terms square and round describe the floor plans of the huts.

One historical interpretation identifies Cannatello as an emporium on a Mycenaean trade route. This route connected Cyprus with western Sardinia in the 13th century BC. The term emporium adds a trade context to the description of the settlement. The Mycenaean designation also appears in two different contexts: the pottery finds and the route. The finds relate to the settlement’s material, while the route refers to a historical connection between Cyprus and western Sardinia. The route’s date and the settlement’s classification indicate different points of reference in time.

Underwater Finds and Fortifications

An underwater archaeological site lies off Cannatello. In 2019, the Soprintendenza del Mare confirmed at least five stone anchors and two lead ingots there. These objects give the underwater site its own profile alongside the settlement on land. A 2021 description also mentions three almost completely preserved fortifications in Cannatello. These form another architectural aspect alongside the settlement’s huts.

Note about Lido Cannatello

At Lido Cannatello in Contrada Fiume Naro, the 2025 Visit Sicily table lists a beach wheelchair and an access walkway. If you need either of these facilities for your plans, check their availability before traveling.
