Castrofilippo: History and Tradition
Accommodation in Castrofilippo
Castrofilippo can be explored through several specific themes: its location by the Iacono stream, Cortile Castello as a landmark in the town’s development, sacred art and religious traditions. Also included is the Sagra della Cipolla Paglina, listed for 2026. For travellers looking for a hotel in Castrofilippo, this overview offers an introduction to the town’s history, art and festival culture.
Location and history
Castrofilippo lies in the upper part of a ridge above the upper valley of the Iacono stream. The Iacono is a right-bank tributary of the Naro. This places the town in relation to the elevated settlement area and the valley below; the tributary relationship also situates the stream within the Naro river system.
Cortile Castello was the former residence of the Morreale family and the town centre from which the construction of Castrofilippo began. It thus links the history of a residence with the start of the town’s physical development. The courtyard is a specific landmark in the origins of Castrofilippo.
Church and historical evidence
Chiesa Madrice was built in 1634 by Maurizio Monreale, Duke of Castrofilippo. The church houses a wooden statue of the Madonna del Rosario with Saint Vincent, made around 1600; it is probably attributed to the Gangi school. The two dates refer to different things: 1634 is the year the church was built, while “around 1600” refers to when the wooden statue was made. This makes it possible to distinguish the building’s history from its art history.
Another historical landmark is located on Monte Castellaccio, about 500 metres north of Castrofilippo. There is a fortification whose origins may be Byzantine and which was later reused by the Arabs. The qualification applies to its origins: a Byzantine origin is possible, while its later reuse by the Arabs marks another period in its history.
Good Friday and local traditions
During the Good Friday processions in Castrofilippo, Christ, Our Lady of Sorrows and Saint John proceed together to Calvario. The Crucifixion ceremony takes place there. Calvario was built in 1937. The procession and ceremony are closely connected: Calvario is both the destination of the procession and the site of the Crucifixion ceremony.
The Good Friday tradition offers a different perspective on the town’s history from the architectural and artistic history of Chiesa Madrice. Here, the focus is on the procession and ceremony; at the church, it is on the year it was built and the artwork with its uncertain attribution. Those interested in local religious culture can therefore find different historical points of reference.
