Villaputzu brings together coastal wetlands, archaeological sites and a strong musical tradition. If you are looking for a hotel in Villaputzu, the focus of your trip can help guide your choice: nature watching, history, cultural events or local cuisine. These different themes give you a concrete starting point for planning your trip.

Wetlands and Coastal Landscape

The Stagni di Murtas e S’Acqua Durci SCI covers 745 hectares and lies within the municipality of Villaputzu. Along the coast, dune systems and wetland ecosystems also shape the landscape; designated SCIs include Pardu Mareus, Is Murtas and Flumini Durci. At the mouth of the Flumendosa, where it meets the sea, the river forms a coastal wetland system in Villaputzu.

The wetland system is suitable for birdwatching and long walks. This lets you make nature watching and exercise the focus of your stay. The designated protected areas and the river mouth describe different facets of the landscape: coastal dunes, wetlands and the Flumendosa system.

Archaeological Sites and Industrial History

The Pozzo Sacro Is Pirois dates back to the Nuragic period and was built between 1600 and 535 BC. From the car park, you can reach it after a walk of about 150 metres. Check local road conditions when planning your visit. Castello di Quirra was built before 1296–1297. Chiesetta di San Nicola was probably built in the first or second decade of the 13th century and is attributed to the Pisans.

More recent uses are also part of the area’s history: Su Presoni in Cirreddis is a Paleo-Christian hypogeum burial site that was later used as a prison. Pottery fragments found at Sarcapos in the Eringiana area are attributed to Nuragic, Etruscan, Greek, Phoenician-Punic and Roman cultures. The finds thus point to several cultural contexts and should not be grouped into a single period.

The mining village of Baccu Locci brings together historic buildings and industrial history. It includes around thirty historic buildings and rare industrial facilities. Arsenopyrite mining remained in operation until 1965. Access is via the SS 125: at the Corr’e Cerbu bridge, an unpaved road branches off at kilometre 82. It follows the streambed inland and reaches the mining village after about ten kilometres. Check local road conditions before setting out.

Launeddas and Summer Events

Launeddas playing has a significant tradition in Villaputzu, dating back to the second half of the 19th century. The Festival delle Launeddas takes place every year on 7 August. It includes a solemn religious procession, which is also attended by launeddas players from other schools on the island. Check the programme for the relevant year before your trip.

The Mostra dell’Artigianato Sarrabese also takes place every summer. Exhibits include textiles, blankets and rugs, as well as table linen, crocheted table sets, wicker baskets and mats. If you would like to plan your stay around the exhibition, check the dates in advance.

Regional Specialties

One of Villaputzu’s gastronomic specialties is Su Presuttu, a ham made from the leg of the pig. A gastronomic tour of the Sarrabus includes tastings of wine, cheese, honey and meat at local businesses. Before booking, check whether the offer is currently available. This helps you distinguish between a local specialty that is part of the culinary tradition and a tour whose availability you should confirm when planning your trip.
