San Priamo: Sanctuary, Tomb and Trails
Accommodation in San Priamo
San Priamo combines archaeological sites with specific trail connections and a culinary event. At the sanctuary site, evidence of human use dates back to the Early Neolithic; the Tomba dei giganti Su Presoni represents a particular form of collective burial. The area also has trail routes and the Sagra de su Pisci, which features a tasting of grilled fish in late August. If you are choosing a destination based on cultural history, trails or an event date, San Priamo offers distinct options to consider.
Sanctuary and local tradition
The sanctuary of San Priamo is located near the town of San Priamo, on the mountain of the same name, and is easily accessible from the SS 125 state road. Human use of the site since the Early Neolithic, from 4300 to 4000 BC, is evidenced by the presence of a domus de janas. This dating gives the site an early archaeological context. The site also includes a spring, which tradition credits with miraculous powers. Two distinct perspectives therefore come together here: archaeological evidence of early human use and a traditional belief associated with the spring.
The Tomba dei giganti Su Presoni
The Tomba dei giganti Su Presoni is a collective burial of the “a filari” type, which chronologically follows older dolmen-like forms. This classification makes comparison with older tomb types part of its cultural and historical context. The structural features give a more specific picture of the monument’s condition: the corridor is over 15 metres long and has partly collapsed; the façade with its architrave entrance is well preserved. The typological classification therefore answers a different question from the monument’s physical condition: it places the tomb type in its chronological context, while the corridor and façade describe the structure as it stands.
Trails and their routes
The Fassoni–Su Presoni hiking trail runs from the former SS 125 in the Fassoni area to the Tomba dei giganti Su Presoni. The tomb is also the endpoint of trail 421 and the starting point of spur 421A. These details help distinguish the routes: Fassoni–Su Presoni names the trail to the archaeological site, while 421 and 421A indicate the tomb’s role as the endpoint and the starting point of a spur.
A restored trail in the San Priamo valley can be explored on foot, by bicycle and on horseback; an approximately 400-metre section is equipped for use by blind people. The Sentieri Primitivi project is a separate initiative: as the first phase of a broader project to enhance the valley, it aims to connect and make accessible the area’s numerous archaeological monuments through a network of trails. The project is therefore focused on creating connections, while the trail information describes specific ways to use the route and an equipped section.
