Sant'Elmo: Coastal Landscape and Granite Islet
Accommodation in Sant'Elmo
Sant'Elmo is on Sardinia’s southeast coast, within the municipality of Castiadas. Spiaggia di Sant’Elmo is in the locality; opposite the headland of Monte Turno lies Scoglio di Sant’Elmo, a small granite islet about 900 metres offshore. Sant'Elmo thus combines a coastal locality with a distinctive rock formation in the sea. The beach, headland and islet offer concrete points of reference to help you place the destination within Sardinia’s southeast coast when planning your trip.
Coast and landscape
Immediately behind Spiaggia Sant’Elmo rises Monte Turno, a now-inactive volcano. Cala Sant’Elmo is characterised by a mix of rocks and small sandy coves. Together, these locations represent different coastal forms: the beach behind the headland and the rocky and sandy stretches of the cala. When considering Sant'Elmo as a destination, you can take more than one type of coastline into account.
The mountain profile of the Oasi dei Sette Fratelli nature park forms the scenic backdrop to the coast of Castiadas. This regional setting complements Sant'Elmo’s specific coastal features. The destination can therefore be viewed in terms of both the beaches and rock formations by the sea and the mountain profile in the wider landscape of Castiadas.
Granite islet and cave below sea level
Scoglio di Sant’Elmo also has a feature below the water’s surface: the granite islet contains a cave below sea level with an air chamber. It is popular with diving enthusiasts. The cave adds a distinctive underwater feature to the visible form of the islet. For travellers interested in natural formations, this is a notable aspect of Sant'Elmo’s landscape, alongside the headland and coastal coves.
Getting there and getting around
A short unpaved turnoff from the southern entrance leads to Cala Sant’Elmo beach; it is better to take it on foot. Factor this surface into your arrival plans: the turnoff is short but unpaved, so walking is the practical way to cover this stretch.
The nearest bus stop to Spiaggia Sant’Elmo is called SANT’ELMO. It is about 0.4 kilometres away on foot and is served by ARST line 135. The distance is given as a walking route. Check the current ARST information for the line and service before travelling, so you can plan your arrival using the service currently in operation.
Su Cannisoni beach can be reached on foot heading north from the locality of Sant'Elmo. The directions give different points of reference: the short turnoff from the southern entrance leads to Cala Sant’Elmo, while Su Cannisoni can be reached from the locality heading north. This makes it possible to distinguish the two destinations by their respective directions and stated starting points.
Seasonal beach activities
Pedal boats are available for seasonal rental at Spiaggia Sant’Elmo. This is one way to add an activity on the water to your time at the beach. Check local availability for your travel dates, as rentals are seasonal.
