Beach and Seabed

The two-kilometer-long beach of Cala Sinzias consists of fine, very white sand. Offshore, the seabed is clear and displays various shades of blue; toward the open sea, the sandy bottom slopes gently. The length of the beach and the shape of the seabed describe different aspects of the coastal landscape: here, the extent of the sandy stretch; there, the slope of the seabed. This gives you a concrete picture of the beach and sea.

Landscape Behind the Beach

Behind the beach is a thinning pine grove, scented with white lilies. Cala Sinzias lies at the foot of a group of secluded, shrub-covered coastal hills. The pine grove and hills form the landward backdrop to the coast and provide a different accent from the open expanse of sand. If you choose a destination based not only on its beach but also on the surrounding landscape, this transition between water, sand, and vegetated backdrop is a defining part of the place.

The Wider Coastal Area

The wider coastal area from Cala Sinzias to the municipal boundary of Villasimius includes Mediterranean scrub and planted conifers. A coastal stretch of natural interest also extends from the beach to this boundary. This broader scale should be distinguished from the immediate description of the beach: the scrub and conifers characterize the wider natural area, while the two kilometers refer to the beach itself. When finding your way around, it is therefore helpful to consider the sandy beach and the wider coastal landscape as two related but distinct features.

Walks and Coastal Features

Cala Sinzias is well suited to walks on the beach and along the shoreline. The frequent wind also makes the area suitable for windsurfers. South of Cala Sinzias, a headland begins, separating the beach from Cala Pira; there, beneath impressive cliffs, the seabed is varied. These different coastal features sit alongside one another: walks follow the beach and shoreline, while the southern stretch is characterized by the headland, cliffs, and varied seabed. When planning a beach day, you can use these landscape features as separate points of reference without confusing them with the sandy beach.

Getting There and Practical Information

The route to Cala Sinzias follows provincial road SP 18; then follow the signs to the beach. Local signage can change, so it is worth checking the directions before setting out. Cala Sinzias is wheelchair accessible. Facilities may vary seasonally; if you rely on a particular facility, confirm its status before your visit. Several beach establishments serve lunch and dinner, although their services may also vary seasonally.

Historical Points of Reference

Two places should be distinguished for historical context. On August 11, 1875, 30 prisoners from the Casa Penale di San Bartolomeo prison in Cagliari landed on the beach at Cala Sinzias. The Museo del territorio Castiadas is located in the town of Castiadas, in the administrative wing of a former penal colony built in 1877. The 1875 landing on the beach and the building erected in 1877 in Castiadas are thus separate historical points of reference.
