If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Quarna Sopra, the village’s viewpoints, religious buildings and festivals can shape your travel plans. The mountains and trails offer specific destinations for hikes and bike rides; the churches and oratories tell different chapters of the village’s history. This can help you decide whether you’re considering Quarna Sopra mainly for its landscape, historic buildings or a festival.

Mountain Views and Trails

At 1,424 metres, Monte Mazzoccone is the highest point in Quarna Sopra. From its summit, panoramic views stretch across Lake Orta. You can also see Lake Orta from Monte Castellaccio, as well as enjoy a view of Mottarone. From Alpe Campello and Ciar, the view extends across the Valstrona to the distinctive Monte Massone. Each named viewpoint offers its own perspective on the landscape.

The trails in Quarna Sopra lead to viewpoints overlooking Lake Orta and to former mountain pastures. On the Anello di Quarna circular route, the trail reaches Quarna Sopra at an elevation of 860 metres and passes the Oratorio della Madonna del Pero. Another hiking route, “Castellaccio (Monte) e Monte Ciar da Cireggio”, first reaches the outskirts of Quarna Sopra and then continues to Monte Castellaccio. If you’re choosing a route, these details offer different landmarks: one is the Oratorio in the village, the other Monte Castellaccio as a further destination.

A cycling route is also listed: the C08 Gravellona Toce–Quarne runs along the bends leading to Quarna Sotto and Quarna Sopra. The route information therefore includes both hiking destinations and a connection for cyclists. Alpe Campello, Quarna Sopra’s sports ground, also has a children’s playground.

Churches, Oratories and Art

The church of Santo Stefano was built in the second half of the 16th century as an extension of an existing church. It houses an organ created in 1727 as one of Giuseppe Serassi’s earliest works. The church is open to visitors during services. The Oratorio di San Rocco was built between the 13th and 14th centuries as the first church in Quarna Sopra and was used mainly as a baptistery. It is located in the old town centre, which served as the community’s civic, economic and religious centre until the 18th century.

The Oratorio della Madonna del Pero was built in 1598 and dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Public art is another of the village’s notable features: since 2018, the Festival del Muro Dipinto has added 24 works to Quarna Sopra, including murals and mosaics. Together, these buildings and artworks offer different ways to explore the village’s history and character.

Festivals in August

Two Sundays are specified for planning a trip around festivals. The annual Madonna della Neve festival at Fontegno takes place on the first Sunday in August. The Madonna del Pero festival is traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday in August. Ferragosto quarnese also takes place in August and alternates annually with Quarna Sotto. If you’d like to plan your trip around one of these events, check the dates for your travel year.

You can choose between these themes according to your interests: the trails focus on viewpoints and former mountain pastures, while the oratories, the church of Santo Stefano and the Festival del Muro Dipinto offer other ways to discover the village. The August festivals may be a deciding factor when choosing your travel dates; the destinations and route details listed can help you choose a hiking or cycling route.
