Baceno: Orrido Sud, museums and sacred heritage
Accommodation in Baceno
Baceno combines a gorge open to visitors with a via ferrata, museums covering different subjects, and sacred heritage. This makes it possible to plan what you would like to explore during your stay: nature and a rock route offer a different focus from alpine farming, the history of the Resistance, or religious art. Baceno’s medieval role also offers a historical perspective on the region. Thanks to its strategic location where the Devero, Antigorio and Formazza valleys meet, the town played an important role in the Alta Val d’Ossola in the Middle Ages. This historical context complements the nature and culture themes with a sense of the region’s wider setting.
Orrido Sud and the Walserfall via ferrata
Orrido Sud is about 200 metres long and 20 to 30 metres deep. Metal stairways and information panels have been installed to make it accessible to visitors. Check the current condition of the site before your visit.
Another route is the Walserfall via ferrata. It is north of Croveo, a hamlet of Baceno, on the road to Alpe Devero, and runs along the rock face beside the Cascata di Agaro waterfall. Check the technical access requirements for the Walserfall via ferrata before using it.
Museums covering different subjects
The Museo dell’Alpeggio documents alpine farming activities. It includes a video room, traditional tools, images and explanatory panels.
Since 2004, the Museo della Resistenza di Goglio has been housed in the building that served as the station for the former cableway to Alpe Devero. The chaplain’s house, “don Amedeo Ruscetta,” in Croveo offers a different focus. Built in 1607 and restored, the building was converted into a museum of sacred art and rural culture. These themes set it apart both from the Museo dell’Alpeggio, which focuses on alpine farming, and from the Museo della Resistenza di Goglio.
Sacred art in Baceno and Croveo
The church of San Gaudenzio contains the Chapel of Our Lady, now called the Rosary Chapel. The frescoes in the Rosary Chapel are dedicated to the life of Mary. Together with the museum of sacred art and rural culture in the chaplain’s house, it offers a distinct cultural focus for planning your trip.
