Nole has several distinct travel themes to explore: the paleontological significance of the Fossil Forest, sacred art with datable works, and a historic craft tradition. There is also a circular walking route and two annual festivals. You can plan your stay around your preferred focus: the natural landscape, local history and festival dates each offer a different perspective.

Fossil Landscape and Protected Walking Route

The Fossil Forest lies along the riverbed of the Stura di Lanzo between the municipalities of Nole Canavese and Ciriè, entirely within fluviopalustrine sediments of the Villafranchian succession. It is considered one of the most important paleontological records in the Piedmont region. This makes it a specific point of interest for travelers interested in fossils and Earth's history: its location by the riverbed and the geologically identified sediments pinpoint the site precisely.

The Sentiero delle Fontane offers another way to explore the natural environment. This circular route is 1.5 kilometers long and lies in the Grange area of Nole; as a protected area, it is part of the Stura di Lanzo Natura 2000 site. The two sites are described in different terms: the Fossil Forest is characterized by its riverbed and sediments, while the Sentiero is notable for its circular route and protected status.

Sacred Art with Datable Details

The sacred buildings offer different historical points of reference. The façade of the Parrocchiale di San Vincenzo Martire was built in 1823, while the portal was installed in 1905. The Santuario di San Vito Martire houses votive paintings, a wooden altar from the 18th century and valuable 17th-century frescoes.

A specific subject appears in the Cappella di San Grato: the 16th-century Fresco della S.Sindone depicts the Holy Shroud as well as Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy and his son Carlo Emanuele. The examples are easy to distinguish by their focus: the façade and portal point to different construction phases, the sanctuary's furnishings include several historic works of art, and the fresco combines a religious subject with two named members of the House of Savoy.

Craftsmanship, Collection and Local Tradition

The history of work is also part of Nole's identity. From the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century, the town was known for making “foët,” or whips. The wood of the hackberry tree (bagolaro), which is widespread in the area and particularly well suited to this purpose, was used. This tradition should be understood as a historic focus: it describes a former craft, not a current offering.

The Museo comunale delle macchine a vapore “Ing. Francesco Bosio” also offers a link to local history. The museum grew out of the collection of engineer Francesco Bosio, which his family donated to the municipality. The “Foaté,” the mask of the Nole Carnival, also refers to the craft: its name means whip-maker. The occupation thus appears both in the historic practice of whip-making and in the name of the carnival mask.

Two Annual Festival Dates

Two annual festivals offer different dates to consider when planning your trip. The Sagra dell'ofela takes place every year on June 2. The Sagra Colori e sapori d'autunno is held annually on the second Sunday in October. The June date and the October date, which is tied to a day of the week, offer different points of interest throughout the year. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the specific event date in advance.

Nole therefore offers several possible focuses for your trip: paleontological sites and a protected walking route, datable sacred art, the history of whip-making, or a stay timed to coincide with one of the festivals. Which of these themes interests you most can help determine your travel dates and choice of hotel.
