Nebbiuno lies on a large moraine terrace halfway up the slope of the Vergante. From Nebbiuno, you can enjoy sweeping views of Lake Maggiore and the lakes of Monate and Varese. The wooded trails, viewpoints and historic sites offer different ways to shape your stay. When choosing a hotel, consider whether you are primarily interested in hiking, taking in the scenery, or learning about the churches and settlement history.

Routes and Trails

This largely wooded area has well-marked trails for hiking and mountain biking. Two stages of the Sentiero Novara provide specific route details: Stage 14 passes through Silvera and Colazza on its way to Fosseno di Nebbiuno. Stage 15 runs from Fosseno di Nebbiuno—more specifically, from the Lavatoio hamlet—to Cassano. This second stage is listed as 12 kilometres long, taking about four hours and 30 minutes, with a difficulty rating of E (hiking trail).

Fosseno di Nebbiuno plays different roles in the descriptions of the two stages: it is the destination of Stage 14 and the starting point of Stage 15, with the Lavatoio hamlet specified as the exact starting point for the latter. For planning your time, you can use the approximately four and a half hours for Stage 15 as a guide. Stage 14 can be identified by its route through Silvera and Colazza.

Viewpoints

A trail through birch and chestnut woods leads to the “Sasso del Pizzo” viewpoint. From there, you can see Lake Maggiore and the lakes of the Province of Varese; the area has picnic facilities. Check the current condition of the facilities before your visit.

Monte Cornaggia also offers sweeping views. At 921 metres, it is the highest mountain on the Sentiero Novara. From the summit, the 360-degree panorama takes in the Monte Rosa, Resegone and Grigne mountain ranges, as well as the plains of the provinces of Novara, Verbania and Varese. This gives you a choice of different views: from Sasso del Pizzo, look out over Lake Maggiore and the lakes of the Province of Varese; from Monte Cornaggia, the panorama also takes in mountain ranges and provincial plains.

Churches and Historic Sites

The first reliable records of the Church of San Giorgio in Nebbiuno date back to 1380. Construction of the Church of Sant’Agata in Fosseno began in the 14th century; the original core of the Church of San Leonardo in Tapigliano dates back to the 12th century. The Church of Santi Nazaro e Celso in Corciago is believed to be one of the hundred churches that San Giulio had built in the 4th century.

Settlement patterns and archaeological finds also offer insight into the area’s history. Campiglia is a medieval settlement with houses and narrow, winding lanes. Finds of Iron Age tools and Gallo-Roman necropolises in the Nebbiuno area attest to settlement dating back to the 7th century BC.

Summer Events in Corciago

Every summer, a series of events organised by local associations takes place in the hamlet of Corciago, at the Madonna della Neve site. At these summer events, you can sample regional dishes and products, including polenta with tapulone, Piedmontese roast, agnolotti, Toma del Mottarone and local Gorgonzola. Check the event dates and food offerings before you travel.
