Galliate offers a range of highlights for your trip: historic buildings, art and the landscape along the Ticino. The Castello Visconteo Sforzesco, two museums in the castle, Villa Fortuna and the Sette Fontane nature trail offer different ways to explore the area’s history and surroundings. Galliate is also one of the preferred access points to the Parco Naturale Valle del Ticino. Depending on whether you are especially interested in history, art or nature, you can give these themes different emphasis.

Nature trail and landscape along the Ticino

The Sette Fontane nature trail is five kilometres long, starts at Parco delle Sette Fontane and can be reached from Galliate. It therefore has a clearly named starting point and a specific length. It offers a distinct nature-focused experience, separate from the wider landscape of the Parco Naturale Valle del Ticino.

Galliate is considered one of the preferred access points to this nature park. The Parco Naturale Valle del Ticino was established as an ecological corridor in 1978 and covers more than 6,500 hectares. In 2002, it was recognised as a biosphere reserve under UNESCO’s MAB Programme. This brings two different scales into focus: the five-kilometre nature trail as an individual route and the extensive natural area of the Ticino. When planning your trip around particular themes, you can consider these perspectives separately rather than treating the trail and the park as the same excursion destination.

Castle, art and motor racing history

The Castello Visconteo Sforzesco was built in 1476 by Galeazzo Sforza, Duke of Milan, on an earlier Visconti military fortress. The castle’s history therefore includes an older fortification: 1476 marks the construction of the castle, while the fortress was its predecessor.

Since 1998, the northeastern tower and part of the adjoining rampart walk have housed the Museo “Angelo Bozzola”. The collection includes sculptures, paintings and graphic works donated to his home municipality by the artist, who was born in Galliate. The museum thus connects the castle’s setting with Bozzola’s artistic legacy and his origins in Galliate.

Another focus in the castle is the Sala Museo “Achille Varzi il signore del volante” in the south wing. Its permanent exhibition is devoted to the racing driver, who was born in Galliate, and displays some of his personal memorabilia. Comparing the two museums reveals the range of subjects: the Museo “Angelo Bozzola” preserves works of fine art, while the Sala Museo focuses on a racing driver and personal memorabilia. Both relate to people from Galliate, but each highlights different aspects.

Villa Fortuna and the year 1859

Villa Fortuna connects its distinctive landscape setting with a historic event. It lies south of Galliate, on the edge of the Ticino’s first alluvial terrace, and overlooks the valley of the Parco del Ticino below. This description of its location draws attention both to the terrace and to the valley beneath the villa.

In June 1859, on the eve of the Battle of Magenta, Villa Fortuna became the headquarters of Vittorio Emanuele II. This is a different historical reference from the construction date of the Castello Visconteo Sforzesco: Villa Fortuna is connected to its role in a historic moment, while the castle was built in 1476 on an earlier military fortress. Those interested in the history of these places will therefore find two distinct points of reference here.

Another historical highlight

The Riseria Capittini adds an economic history perspective to these themes. Giuseppe Capittini founded it in 1881. Its founding year provides another point of reference in Galliate’s history, distinct from the castle’s architectural and artistic history and the events associated with Villa Fortuna. Together, these offer several independent themes to help you decide which interests to prioritise on a trip to Galliate.
