Cavaglio D'agogna: Churches and Baraggia
Accommodation in Cavaglio D'agogna
Churches, frescoes and the Baraggia landscape give Cavaglio D'agogna a distinct cultural and natural character. Its architectural history spans from the 17th-century Oratorio di San Rocco to work on the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Mamante in the 18th century. Other highlights include the Chiesa della Madonna della Neve, with its two connected structures, and the Ex mulino along the Roggia Molinara. These features offer different points of focus when choosing a destination: religious art, historic architecture and a protected landscape system.
Churches and Art History
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Mamante was almost entirely rebuilt in the first half of the 18th century. The exterior work was completed in 1728 and the interior work in 1732. The church has five altars. The marble high altar, built in 1732, is dedicated to San Mamante. It is the only church in the Province of Novara dedicated to this saint.
The Oratorio di San Rocco dates from an earlier period: the community of Cavaglio built it in 1631 after the town was spared from a plague. 18th-century frescoes survive inside. They depict a guardian angel and Saint Bernard subduing the devil with a chain. The building dates from one century, while its surviving decorative paintings are from another.
The Chiesa della Madonna della Neve comprises two distinct structures: an older chapel dedicated to the Madonna delle Grazie and a church dedicated to the Madonna della Neve. Two arches connect the two parts. A restored fresco depicts the Madonna nursing the child, flanked by Saint Peter and Saint Sebastian. The church is accessed directly from the forecourt.
Rural heritage is also part of the local landscape: the Ex mulino is thought to date from the 16th century and lies along the Roggia Molinara. It can be seen from Via Martiri and Via Matteotti.
Baraggia and Getting There
The ancient fluvioglacial terrace of Cavaglio features a Baraggia landscape of level woodland, heathland and vineyards. The terrace system is recognised as a biotope and protected by the Parco Regionale delle Baragge di Pian del Rosa. This natural setting complements the churches and frescoes, and its protected status is also part of the destination.
