Fontaneto D'Agogna: Castle, Trails and Festivals
Accommodation in Fontaneto D'agogna
Fontaneto D'Agogna combines historic buildings, trails in the surrounding area and regional events. You can plan your trip around cultural history, outdoor activities or the dates of the festivals.
Cultural History and Architecture
The Castello di Fontaneto d'Agogna is first mentioned in the 10th century. Its historic structure had a square ground plan, with four round corner towers and two square towers. Ravelins stood in front of the eastern and western entrances and exits. Those interested in historic architecture can note the contrast between the clear basic layout and the towers, which have different designs.
The Oratorio dei Santi Fabiano e Sebastiano stands in Piazza Castello. It measures 8 × 4 meters and occupies a quarter of the central nave of the former Benedictine church, which was dedicated to Saint Sebastian. A fresco on the altar depicts Saint Sebastian, the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, and Saint Joseph protecting the castle. The painting thus connects the figures of the saints with the Castello, while the Oratorio's location in Piazza Castello places it in a specific historical context.
A free pedestrian path leads from Piazza Castello to the Oratorio and is also accessible to people with disabilities. The Castello has entrances from Piazza Castello and Piazza dell'Annunciata; the areas are private property. Check the current access conditions for both sites before your visit.
Places and Trails in the Surrounding Area
The Chiesa di San Martino stands on the edge of the village of the same name, near the spring known as the “fontana di San Martino.” The Torre del Mirasole is a 19th-century building. It lies between Case Nuove and Tapulino, on the hills in the direction of the municipality of Ghemme.
The Torre can be reached via unpaved trails, which are recommended for walking and mountain biking, particularly in spring and summer. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out. A trail leads from Camuccioni to the Torre del Mirasole through deciduous woods with oaks and chestnut trees, and past small cultivated plots and a few small vineyards. This route therefore includes both wooded sections and smaller areas of farmland.
For cycling tourism, the “02-(GF) Percorso Verde” route ends at the Chiesa di Fontaneto d'Agogna. This endpoint should not be confused with the Chiesa di San Martino or the trail to the Torre del Mirasole: the route leads to the church specifically named Chiesa di Fontaneto d'Agogna.
Festivals and Regional Cuisine
The Fiera della Cipolla takes place in Fontaneto d'Agogna every third weekend in September. For two days, onion-based dishes are offered for tasting. The program also includes a farmers' market featuring producers from the region. The Fiera therefore showcases both onion dishes and products from regional vendors.
FontanetoArteSapori takes place every year in June and comprises three weeks of themed food-and-wine evenings. Chefs from the region lead tastings of high-quality dishes and wines. The event format also includes cultural evenings in the square. The two festivals thus differ both in timing and in their programs: the Fiera is held over the third weekend in September and offers onion dishes for tasting over two days, while FontanetoArteSapori runs for three weeks each June. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the specific event dates before booking your hotel.
