Trecate combines sacred art and local history with a greenway along the Ticino. When planning your stay, you can choose different focuses: medieval churches, frescoes and an altarpiece, Villa Cicogna with its park, or a section of the Sentiero Novara. These destinations showcase different sides of the town—from historic buildings to a route connecting Trecate with Galliate.

Churches and Art History

The Chiesa di San Cassiano dates back to the Middle Ages and is located in the historic center. It is associated with the feast of Saint Cassian, which is celebrated with Masses, processions and other events. Also in the heart of the historic center is the Parrocchia Santa Maria Vergine Assunta. Its façade is designed in the Neoclassical style. The two churches offer distinct historical and architectural highlights: San Cassiano represents a medieval origin, while the parish church features a classical-style façade.

The Chiesa di San Francesco has its own art history: it was consecrated in 1514, after an earlier chapel dedicated to Santa Barbara was remodelled. In the presbytery, frescoes by Cerano depict Saul’s fall and the restoration of his sight. The Oratorio del Gonfalone preserves an altarpiece by Cerano, dated after 1617. It is next to the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta. The two sacred buildings therefore showcase different art forms: frescoes in the presbytery of San Francesco and an altarpiece in the Oratorio.

Villa Cicogna and Parco Cicogna

Villa Cicogna is an example of 18th-century architecture and houses the municipal library, which has been located there since 2002. This brings together a historic building and a contemporary cultural use. Parco Cicogna surrounds the villa and includes green space with play facilities and large trees. The park also includes the Cortile delle Magnolie and an Italian-style garden.

Those interested in architecture will find a different focus at the villa than at the churches: here, the 18th-century design is paired with a municipal library and a park complex. The named garden areas add their own design features to the green space. The villa and park can thus be seen as a connected part of Trecate’s cultural and green spaces.

Border History and Routes along the Ticino

Under the House of Savoy, Trecate was historically a border town between Piedmont and Lombardy. A bridge and a customs house were established at the crossing over the Ticino. This history draws attention beyond individual buildings to the town’s former role at the river crossing. It differs from the churches’ art-historical themes and offers another way to explore local history.

There is also a specific starting point for a walking stage: Stage 9 of the Sentiero Novara is a greenway. It begins at Ponte Ticino di San Martino in Trecate, ends in Galliate and runs mostly through the Parco Naturale del fiume Ticino. The route can therefore be treated as a distinct focus for your itinerary, while the churches and villa offer themes related to architectural history and art. Check the route details locally before setting out.

Cultural Events

The town’s cultural offerings also include the Cine Teatro Silvio Pellico. The auditorium has 499 seats in the stalls and balcony. This figure describes the size of the venue, not the programme on any particular day. Together with the churches, villa and greenway, the theatre shows that Trecate cannot be reduced to a single sightseeing focus: you can plan your stay around art, local history, green spaces or a walking route.
