Discover Cossato: culture, history and trails
Accommodation in Cossato
Cossato offers several ways to explore the area during your stay: church art and architecture, the textile history of the Biellese, and walking and cycling opportunities. You can decide whether to include historic architectural styles, painting, the region’s development or an organised activity in your travel plans.
Art, architecture and local history
The Ecomuseo del Cossatese e delle Baragge connects its museum unit to the surrounding area through a network of trails. This offers a different perspective from viewing a single building: the connection between the museum unit and its surroundings is also part of the concept.
In the Chiesa dei SS. Pietro e Paolo, the central nave displays Romanesque forms. As the church’s central longitudinal space, it provides a distinct architectural point of interest. Recent restoration work also uncovered valuable fragments of late Gothic frescoes. They are among the most interesting and best-preserved examples of late Gothic painting in the Biellese. Architecture and painting thus provide different points of interest within the same church.
Villa Ranzoni also adds to the historical picture. Its original core dates from before 1722, although the exact date of the complex is uncertain. The origins of Castello di Castellengo are traced back to the 10th century. The castle stands on a hill overlooking the plain below. Its building history and its setting in the landscape can be considered side by side without reducing them to a single theme.
The transformation that took place in the 19th century also shaped the history of the Biellese: Cossato, like the region, developed from an area characterised by agriculture and craftsmanship into a centre of textile and wool industrialisation. The Biella–Novara railway line is also part of the town’s history. It was inaugurated in 1938 along with Cossato’s new railway station. These dates place industrial and transport developments in their historical context.
Trails, a trail race and a cycling tour
The activities differ in format. The Trail dei 5 Comuni is a trail-running and Nordic walking competition. Its route passes through the five municipalities bordering Parco della Pianetta di Cossato. La Biciclettata, in turn, is a cycling tour through Cossato that is open to everyone. These offer two distinct options: a competition involving trail running and Nordic walking, and an open cycling tour.
When planning, you can therefore consider which kind of activity interests you: a competition format that passes through several municipalities, or a cycling tour through Cossato. Both complement the town’s cultural and historical attractions, but each has its own focus. The Ecomuseum’s network of trails offers another connection to the surrounding area; it is part of the museum’s concept and should not be confused with a specific competition or cycling tour format.
Choose the right focus for your stay
If you are looking for a hotel in Cossato, the purpose of your trip can help guide your search. Are you most interested in Romanesque architecture and late Gothic painting, the textile and wool history of the Biellese, or trail-running, Nordic walking and cycling opportunities?
