Castello di Valdengo and Its History
Castello di Valdengo is a complex of buildings of medieval origin in the municipality of Valdengo; it was founded between the 11th and 12th centuries. From the 15th century onward, it formed the centre of the domain of an important Biellese branch of the Avogadro family. Its use changed from a military complex to a shared residence. Thus, its early foundation, later role as a seat of a domain, and change of function represent distinct chapters in the castle’s history. Castello di Valdengo also houses a *bertesca*, making it one of two castles in the Biellese with one.
The chapel belonging to the Castello is dedicated to Saints Eusebius, Anthony and Catherine. Its frescoes date from the 14th century and are attributed to the Maestro di Oropa. The dedication names the saints; the date and attribution place the frescoes in their art-historical context. The Castello itself is used as a residence and is not open to visitors.
Churches and Works of Art
The Chiesa di San Biagio brings together two distinct periods: its architectural form reflects a 17th-century renovation, while it contains a precious 16th-century panel painting. The panel is attributed to the school of Bernardino Lanino. The building’s history and its artistic furnishings thus belong to different centuries and can be considered separately.
The historical record of the Chiesa di Sant’Andrea reaches further back: a papal bull mentioned it in 1184 as a Benedictine cell; it was rebuilt in the 17th century. The early mention and the later rebuilding mark distinct points in its history.
The historic centre of Valdengo has houses decorated with elaborate frescoes; it is also home to the 17th-century parish church of San Michele. The frescoes on the houses and the church building offer different insights into the historic centre’s design: one detail concerns the houses, while the other identifies a church with a specific date. The cultural picture therefore also includes the historic town centre, not just the castle complex.
