Castel Boglione: Wine Country, Hills and History
Accommodation in Castel Boglione
Castel Boglione lies in the Monferrato wine region, among the hills of Alto Monferrato. Wine and landscape provide a common thread for finding your way around before a trip: an e-bike tour takes you through hills and vineyards, while the Araldica Enoteca organizes visits and wine tastings. There are also buildings and art installations with different historical connections. This makes it possible to understand the town through several specific themes: winegrowing, architecture and local history.
Wine Country and E-Bike Tour
The “e-bike Nizza Tour” takes you through the hills and vineyards where Nizza DOCG is produced. It combines exploring the landscape with the winegrowing for which the area is known. Information is available about guided tours, as well as reservations for bikes and tours. If you plan to take the ride, check the relevant tour and reservation information in advance. Unlike the Enoteca, the focus here is on the landscape: the tour passes through the area where Nizza DOCG comes from.
Wine Tastings by Appointment
In Castel Boglione, the Araldica Enoteca organizes visits and wine tastings by prior appointment. If you are planning a visit or tasting, arrange a time in advance. The selection includes Araldica wines, wines from the Il Cascinone, La Battistina and Santa Seraffa wineries, as well as a selection from some of the best wine regions in Italy and around the world. It therefore includes both named wines and wineries, as well as a wider selection from Italy and abroad. While the e-bike tour explores winegrowing through the landscape, the Enoteca offers a different way to engage with the subject: through visits, tastings and its selection.
Local History and Church Architecture
The former Castello di Castelvero stood within the territory of Castel Boglione and was destroyed around 1230 in connection with the founding of Nizza Monferrato. This connection places the castle within an earlier period of local history. A different chapter is represented by the Chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù e Nostra Signora Assunta: it was inaugurated in 1914 and designed in an eclectic Neo-Romanesque style with Gothic, Baroque and Neoclassical elements. Three naves, a large central octagonal dome and a Latin-cross floor plan describe the church’s layout. The dome provides a central focal point, while the naves and cross-shaped plan offer clues to its spatial organization. Castel Boglione thus brings together a historical connection to the destroyed castle and a church building with precisely specified architectural features.
Remembrance and Art Installation
The Monumento ai Caduti di Castel Boglione is dedicated to remembering those who fell in war. The Panchina Gigante Rossa e Blu offers a different kind of connection to local history: it was inaugurated on August 11, 2019, near the Cascina Garitina farm. Its seat and backrest are red, while its base is blue. The bench is one of the artistic giant-bench installations found mainly in the Langhe and Monferrato. The two sites can therefore be distinguished by their purpose: the Monumento commemorates the fallen, while the Panchina is part of a regionally widespread art form. Its colors, name and inauguration date give this particular installation a distinctive, clearly described character.
