Antignano offers several clearly distinct points of interest for planning a trip: religious buildings with different historical associations, the landscape along the SP 8, and the local Mais 8 file corn variety. There is also a cycling route between Alba and Asti. This allows you to consider cultural history, landscape and regional food traditions as separate areas of interest.

Churches and historical associations

The Chiesa Beata Vergine del Carmine is Antignano’s neo-Gothic parish church. Its floor plan follows the shape of a Latin cross, and the building has three naves. These details describe different aspects of the architecture: the cross-shaped floor plan indicates the basic layout, while the three naves describe its division. The church can therefore be understood not only through its stylistic classification, but also through its floor plan and structure. If you are interested in religious architecture, the building offers more than just a period designation.

The Cappella BMV della Mercede has a different historical and geographical context. It lies on the outskirts of Antignano, in the Vigna area; it was built in Borgo Vigna between 1626 and 1647. The chapel contains a large, valuable oil painting depicting the founding of the Mercedarian Order and its founder. The construction period and the subject of the painting provide two specific points of reference for learning about this religious building.

The Church of San Giovanni is mentioned as early as a document from 964. It still stands today and is located near the town centre. The date 964 refers to the documentary mention, not to a recorded year of construction. A document from 1165 is historical evidence for Antignano Castle. The Church of San Rocco dates from the 17th century. These dates therefore serve different purposes: they refer to a mention, documentary evidence and the origins of a church.

Landscape and cycling route

The SP 8 descends towards the Tanaro Valley, passing through hazelnut groves, fields and poplar groves. These landscape features are set alongside a specifically named road and its direction towards the valley. The Alba–Asti cycling route via Roero is a separate route, with a stated length of 38.6 kilometres.

This cycling route can be combined with the ASTI–ALBA route through the Langhe to form a circuit. There are therefore two different route configurations: the individual cycling route with its stated length, and the possible combination that forms a circuit. The distance of 38.6 kilometres refers to the Alba–Asti route via Roero. If you compare routes, keep this distinction in mind rather than automatically applying the distance to the combined option.

Mais 8 file and regional cuisine

Mais 8 file is an old corn variety that is still grown in Antignano. It has a lower yield and very high quality. Stone milling produces flour from the variety, which is used for polenta and tagliatelle. This identifies both the processing method and two specific uses for the flour. For your trip planning, it offers another area of interest alongside churches and landscape: the connection between local cultivation and cuisine.
