Sant'Agata Fossili brings together a distinctive geological history with religious and medieval heritage. The name of the town acquired the suffix “Fossili” in 1863, after fossils from the Middle Miocene had repeatedly been found in the marls of Sant'Agata. The town can therefore be explored from several perspectives: the geological formation along the Rio Mazzapiedi is a focal point, while churches, chapels and historic buildings add religious and political history.

Geology and Fossils

Below the settlement of Sant'Agata Fossili, the type section of the Marne di Sant'Agata Fossili Formation is visible along the Rio Mazzapiedi. The grey-blue marls range from the Tortonian to the Messinian. In places, the lower section alternates with sandy-conglomeratic deposits. The focus is therefore not just a single type of rock, but a named formation with different deposits.

The outcrop contains a diverse fossil macrofauna: snails, bivalves and isolated corals. These finds bring the geological theme to life and add context to the history behind the town's name. A short geological trail begins in the settlement of Sant'Agata Fossili. A geology-focused walk is therefore another local attraction to consider when planning your stay.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The Chiesa di Sant'Agata was built between 1500 and 1575. The parish church of Sant'Agata preserves an old chapel with numerous frescoes, including one depicting the martyrdom of the saint. The feast day in honour of Saint Agatha is celebrated on 5 February. Specific events may vary. If you would like to plan your stay around the festival, check the event dates in advance.

In the higher part of Sant'Agata Fossili stands a massive building called Castello. The medieval building was constructed as a monk's cell. Its history should be distinguished from that of another building in Podigliano: at the beginning of the 14th century, the Castello di Podigliano served as a refuge for Guelphs fleeing Tortona.

Podigliano is now a hamlet of Sant'Agata Fossili and was historically one of the diocese's five castellanies. The church of San Michele contains a choir fresco of the Madonna and Child enthroned, probably created in 1603 and attributed to Barattini. The statue of Saint Michael was also restored in 1827, and the church building was restored in 1964. In Torre Sterpi, the small church of Madonna della Guardia bears an inscription dated 30 May 1893. It names Giuseppe Pernigotti as its founder.

Wine as Another Local Attraction

Wine is another tangible local experience: wines from the vineyards of Locanda del Barco—Varvanera, Invè and Costa Mezzana—can be tasted and purchased at the agriturismo. This lets you complement the geological and historical aspects of your stay with a tasting.
