Casale Monferrato: Culture and History
Accommodation in Casale Monferrato
Casale Monferrato offers a range of cultural attractions for visitors: historic buildings, sacred spaces and collections relating to art history. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan your trip around the topics that interest you most—such as the history of the Castello, the synagogue or the works in the museums.
Castello and Cittadella: two historic buildings
Construction of the present-day Castello di Casale Monferrato was begun by Giovanni II Paleologo and completed in 1357. After Casale was granted city status in 1474 and became the capital of the Marquisate of Monferrat, the Castello was remodelled and served as the seat of the court. Its history therefore reflects distinct stages: the completion of the present-day building in the 14th century and its later role as a court residence.
Another historic building is the Cittadella di Casale Monferrato. It was inaugurated in 1590 as an imposing hexagonal fortress. The Castello and Cittadella thus represent different architectural forms and historical dates: the castle and its later function shape the history of one, while the hexagonal fortress defines the other. This distinction helps you avoid treating the two attractions as one and the same place.
Art collections and Bistolfi’s development
At the Museo Civico e Gipsoteca Bistolfi, the Pinacoteca displays approximately 250 works, including paintings and sculptures. The Gipsoteca Leonardo Bistolfi exhibits 170 sculptures and illustrates the sculptor’s entire artistic development. Comparing the two sections of the collection brings together different media with a clear focus on Bistolfi’s sculptural work. This makes a visit especially interesting for travellers who want to explore not only works of art but also the development of an individual artist.
The synagogue and museums in the museum complex
The Sinagoga di Casale Monferrato was inaugurated in 1595. After several extensions and alterations, it features a Piedmontese interior in the Baroque-Rococo style, shaped by a meticulous restoration in 1969. The interior thus brings together different stages of the building’s history and a specific restoration period.
The location of the Museo degli Argenti is also useful for finding your way around the complex: it is housed in the matroneum, the synagogue’s former women’s gallery, as well as on the first and second floors of the two buildings in the museum complex. The Museo del Tesoro del Duomo, also known as “Sacrestia aperta,” is located in the cathedral. It offers both a historical and architectural tour of the museum rooms and an exhibition featuring a selection of silverwork and a small art gallery. The two museums therefore have different focuses and are located in different places.
Visiting the Cattedrale di Sant’Evasio
Guided tours of the Cattedrale di Sant’Evasio are available by prior reservation. On the second weekend of each month, during “Casale città aperta,” a volunteer accompanies members of the public on a visit to the cathedral. If you are planning a visit, check the specific dates in advance so you can include the available type of visit in your itinerary.
A point of interest on the Po
The city’s cultural landscape can also be complemented with a look at the river area: Bosco Pastrona lies on the right bank of the Po, in the Ronzone district. This precise location sets it apart from the historic buildings and collections highlighted in the other sections. When choosing your travel interests, you can therefore weigh architectural and art-related themes against this connection to the Po, without conflating the different places.
Decide whether you would like to focus your plans mainly on the history of the Castello, the art collections, the synagogue or the cathedral.
