Rustico: History, Memorial Sites and Church
Accommodation in Rustico
Rustico is connected with the events of the Second Battle of Ancona and the operations along the Musone River in July 1944. The local architectural history includes the Chiesa di San Giuseppe; a stage of the TraversaMarche also passes a short distance from the hamlet. The themes range from historic memorial sites and sacred architecture to a specific hiking stage.
Memorial Sites and the Events of 1944
Rustico was part of the sector of the Second Battle of Ancona associated with Polverigi. The battle was fought from 17 to 19 July 1944 by Polish, British and Italian CIL troops under General Anders. Rustico was captured late in the evening of 17 July. In the wider regional area, the Polish troops’ 1944 line of attack ran through Casenuove, Polverigi and Agugliano.
The Monumento a Rustico ai caduti del CIL commemorates the CIL soldiers killed during the operations along the Musone River on 17 and 18 July 1944. Its memorial scope thus covers two days; Rustico was captured late in the evening of 17 July.
Two commemorative plaques are on the front wall of the former primary school in Rustico. The larger plaque, installed in 2014, names those who fell in the War of Liberation during the battle of 17 July 1944; the smaller plaque, installed in 1984, commemorates the military and civilian victims from Rustico and Polverigi during the Second World War. The same building thus bears a memorial to a battle event and a commemoration that includes victims from two places.
Chiesa di San Giuseppe: History and Architectural Details
The Chiesa di San Giuseppe was built in Rustico between 1907 and 1934, replacing the small Chapel of Santa Lucia, which had by then been demolished. It has a simple Liberty-style design, a rectangular floor plan and two side chapels. On one side it is attached to the rectory and on the other to the bell tower. Its false rose window was decorated with ceramic work. The basic form, side chapels and extensions on both sides give the building a clearly defined architectural layout.
The three works are listed among the paintings inside the Chiesa di San Giuseppe: “Virgin Enthroned with Child, Saint Lucy and Saint Agatha”, “Madonna Enthroned with Child, St John and St Catherine of Alexandria” and “Immaculate Conception, with St John the Baptist and St Francis of Assisi”. Two titles name the Madonna and Child enthroned, along with Saints Lucy, Agatha, John and Catherine of Alexandria; the third refers to the Immaculate Conception with St John the Baptist and St Francis of Assisi.
TraversaMarche: A Hiking Stage near Rustico
The fifth stage of the TraversaMarche runs from Santa Maria Nuova to Offagna and passes a short distance from the hamlet of Rustico. Along the stage, the road continues as Via Rustico and offers green views. After leaving Via Rustico, the route turns into Via Traversa and then onto an unpaved farm track.
For planning your trip, the named roads and the farm track give a concrete impression of the route of this stage. Rustico is situated as a hamlet a short distance from the route; the TraversaMarche provides a hiking connection alongside the destination’s historical and architectural themes.
