Offagna brings together medieval defensive architecture, church art, museums and a winemaking tradition. The town can therefore be explored through a range of themes: the fortress draws attention to defence and views, the churches combine different phases of construction with sacred works of art, and two museums cover history and natural science respectively. Villa Malacari and its wine culture, along with the Feste Medievali, add to this picture. As you plan your trip, you can decide whether architectural history, collections, wine or an event held at a particular time should be your main focus.

Rocca di Offagna: Defensive Architecture and Views

The Rocca di Offagna was built between 1454 and 1456 as a defensive stronghold against nearby Osimo. The Camminamento di Ronda contains positions for bombards. Their location on the ramparts makes the fortress’s defensive purpose clear through a specific architectural feature. The central mastio includes former prison rooms and a terrace at the top of the tower. From this terrace, the view extends from the Apennines to the Riviera del Conero. Two different aspects thus come together within the Rocca: the architectural features of its defences and the expansive view from the tower terrace.

Church Art and Building Phases

The three churches reflect different periods of construction and artistic styles. The Chiesa del Santissimo Sacramento was rebuilt between 1787 and 1791 by Andrea Vici on the site of an existing 16th-century building. A large painting of the Last Supper is located behind the main altar. The Chiesa di San Tommaso Apostolo was built between 1666 and 1675; its altarpiece depicts San Bernardino presenting Offagna to the Madonna.

The Chiesa di Santa Lucia was built as early as 1372 and rebuilt in 1674 by the Confraternita di Santa Lucia. It houses a 17th-century wooden crucifix. In terms of age, the building of Santa Lucia dates back the furthest, while its reconstruction and the crucifix reveal later layers of its history. At the Santissimo Sacramento, by contrast, the rebuilding on an older structure shapes the church’s appearance; San Tommaso, with its altarpiece, is another point of reference for sacred art in Offagna.

Museums: The History of Liberation and Natural Science

The Museo della Liberazione di Ancona documents the cooperation between Polish soldiers, partisans and the local civilian population in the liberation of Ancona. Photographic and wartime documentation covers the conflict, the suffering and the Allied advance. The exhibits thus connect the groups involved with the experiences and course of the liberation.

The Museo di Scienze Naturali “Luigi Paolucci” offers a different focus. Its collections cover palaeontology, mineralogy, zoology and botany. Luigi Paolucci personally assembled many of the items in the collection. Offagna therefore offers two clearly distinct museum themes: the history of Ancona’s liberation and natural science collections spanning several disciplines.

Villa Malacari: History and Wine

Villa Malacari was built in 1668 by Andrea Malacari. The villa contains a historic wine cellar where Malacari wines are made. The winery offers tastings of its organic wines with typical local products, as well as tours of the historic wine cellar. Contact the winery directly for information about these offers. Villa Malacari thus combines the history of the building with wine production and experiences centred on wine and local products.
