Vizzola Ticino brings together the River Ticino and its distinctive course with religious and industrial history. Its natural landscape is centered around Castelnovate and the Ansa di Castelnovate; historical themes range from the Chiesa di San Giulio to the Ipposidra and the hydroelectric power station. If you are planning a stay, you can choose the focus of your trip according to these different interests.

River Landscape and Circular Route

Part of Castelnovate, a district of Vizzola Ticino, lies within the Parco Lombardo della Valle del Ticino and is also designated as a Site of Community Importance. In this landscape, the Ansa di Castelnovate is a distinctive geographical feature: it is the largest meander of the River Ticino and has a characteristic S shape. The river bend gives the area a clear connection to nature, while the circular route bears the name of the bend.

The official Ansa di Castelnovate circular route starts and ends at the hydroelectric power station in Vizzola Ticino. It is 7.06 kilometers long and is considered easy to walk or cycle. Its length, difficulty rating, and starting and ending points give you specific details to help decide whether this circular route fits your plans for your stay.

The S6 trail should be considered separately: it has sections with unpaved and cobblestone surfaces, as well as some uphill stretches. Almost its entire length is unsuitable for people with disabilities. If you plan to take this trail, bear this limitation in mind when choosing a route that suits you.

Church and Technical History

The construction of the Chiesa di San Giulio and the establishment of the parish took place at different times. The church was built in 1579 by extending an older building; the parish of San Giulio in Vizzola Ticino was established between 1609 and 1611. The building is small and rectangular, with a single-nave layout, two side chapels, and a square choir. The Baroque altar includes an 18th-century painting that some attribute to Carlo Marino of Oleggio. This attribution is uncertain.

The hydroelectric power station also tells a story of several construction phases. It was inaugurated on October 9, 1901, in the presence of the Italian royal family. The current structure dates from a major renovation in 1937. The fact that the Ansa di Castelnovate circular route starts and ends at the power station links a specific landmark to the town’s technical history without conflating the two.

The Ipposidra has a different technical story. This animal-drawn railway transported boats overland along the River Ticino between Tornavento and Sesto Calende. It operated from 1858 to 1865. Remains of the Ipposidra can be traced along a partly preserved unpaved path through the vegetation. The present-day Ipposidra route starts and ends at Vizzola Ticino’s town hall, so its endpoints differ from those of the Ansa di Castelnovate circular route.

Another construction date comes from the Villa e industrie Caproni complex: it was built in 1920 with an E-shaped layout. The history of aviation also includes the former aircraft workshops dating from 1915, which now house the Museo del volo Volandia. If Volandia is one of your reasons for visiting, check the museum’s visiting options in advance.

Vizzola Ticino thus brings together traces of different periods: the construction history of San Giulio, the development of the hydroelectric power station, and former transport and aviation sites. Comparing the routes also helps narrow down which walk is right for you: the 7.06-kilometer circular route has its own stated details, while the S6 trail comes with the surface, uphill, and accessibility information described above.
