San Genesio ed Uniti brings together wetlands, church architecture, and historical links to the Battle of Pavia. The heronries give the landscape a distinctive character; the Church of San Genesio Martire and Porta Pescarina offer further glimpses into the town’s history.

Wetlands and landscape

West of the town center, the Garzaia della Carola lies entirely within the municipal boundaries. The 2016 municipal planning document describes an area of about 42 hectares, consisting mostly of marshland with wetland vegetation. It identifies a high water table and numerous ditches as defining conditions. The date makes clear that this description is from 2016.

The Garzaia della Carola cycling route is one of the routes of local interest. If you are planning a ride along this route, check the local route conditions beforehand.

The Garzaia di Porta Chiossa lies east of the built-up area of San Genesio. The wetland was formed by a former riverbed of the Ticino. Night herons, little egrets, squacco herons, and grey herons have been recorded in the heronry.

The two area figures refer to different boundaries: the area described for the Garzaia della Carola is about 42 hectares, while the Garzaia di Porta Chiossa covers 81 hectares in total. Part of it lies in Sant'Alessio con Vialone. This distinguishes the area figure for Porta Chiossa from the Carola area, which lies entirely within San Genesio ed Uniti.

The entire municipal area lies within the Area del Parco (Barco) Visconteo. It was declared an area of significant public interest in 2018. The landscape is therefore characterized not only by individual wetlands, but also by this broader protected-area designation.

Church architecture and local history

The Church of San Genesio Martire has a Baroque façade with a concave wall surface. Concave means that the surface curves inward. Inside, the church consists of a central main space with an irregular octagonal floor plan, two side chapels, and a rectangular presbytery and choir. Octagonal means eight-sided; the floor plan is described as irregular.

Toward the end of the 14th century, the faithful from the surrounding areas gathered at the Church of San Genesio Martire as a pieve. Its historical role thus extended beyond the immediate locality. This former function is distinct from the church’s present-day architecture: it points to the church’s importance to the surrounding areas at the time.

Porta Pescarina was a gateway to the Visconti Park and is considered an element of particular historical and symbolic significance in San Genesio ed Uniti. The church and the gate point to different historical contexts: the former gathering of the faithful and access to the Visconti Park.

The history of the Battle of Pavia

The municipality of San Genesio ed Uniti holds a historical reenactment of the Battle of Pavia in even-numbered years. If the event is a deciding factor for your travel dates, check the dates and program for the relevant edition.

The permanent exhibition “Battaglia di Pavia 1525” also explores the subject. Dioramas depicting individual phases of the battle are on display at Ca' de' passeri, in the municipal council chamber.
