Romagnese brings together a network of trails, natural sites, churches and local traditions. You can choose different focuses for your trip: routes through the countryside, botanical diversity or a look at the town’s history.

Hiking Trails and Routes Around Romagnese

The trail network covers 80 kilometres at elevations between 500 and 1,300 metres. The trails can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Individual routes differ considerably in their course and length: Trail 1 starts in the village square and leads via Casa Picchi and the hamlets of Casa Ariore, Casa Ghiozzi and Casa Villa to the Church of Beata Vergine Addolorata on Monte Zuccarello.

Trail 3 also starts in the village square. It crosses the Rivarolo stream and follows the Via Francigena to the Oratorio SS Fabiano e Sebastiano. The two routes described therefore lead to different destinations: Trail 1 to a church on Monte Zuccarello, and Trail 3 to an oratory.

Another route is the Sentiero delle Cascate del Rivarolo. This 3.6-kilometre trail leads from the medieval village alongside the Rivarolo stream through dense forests, across fords and over small bridges to Casa Rocchi and the Madonnina del Fosso, a small place of worship set into the rock. Along the way, the trail passes three waterfalls whose old names have been preserved in the dialect of the Oltrepò Pavese.

For a longer option, the Anello di Romagnese follows a high-altitude route for about 30 kilometres to the foothills of Monte Penice. The lengths of the routes mentioned provide a concrete comparison of their distances: the 3.6 kilometres of the Sentiero delle Cascate versus about 30 kilometres for the Anello.

Pietra Corva and Protected Landscapes

The Pietra Corva Botanical Garden lies at an elevation of 950 metres on the slopes of Monte Pietra di Corvo. A striking, steep outcrop of dark volcanic rock defines the terrain. A visitor centre and educational signs along the inner paths complement a visit to the garden. Around 1,200 plant species are grouped according to their geographical origins, significant plant collections, and ecological and environmental growing conditions.

The protected natural area includes the SIC Sassi Neri – Pietra Corva, which covers 667 hectares within the municipality of Romagnese. Part of the Monte Alpe nature reserve also lies within the municipality and belongs to the Natura 2000 network. The Monte Alpe area has trekking trails for hikers of different ability levels.

Churches, a Museum and Local Traditions

The parish church of San Lorenzo combines original Romanesque features with later Baroque additions and is considered a historical and artistic landmark. Construction of the present-day church began around the middle of the 16th century; it was completed in 1728. A religious itinerary takes in three churches and several oratories in the municipality and its hamlets.

The Romagnese Museum of Rural Art, also known as M.AP.LO 4P, is housed in the tower of Dal Verme Castle. This ethnographic museum was established through donations of everyday objects and work tools from village families. Visits are possible by appointment arranged by telephone; arrange your visit by phone before travelling.

BrĂĽsadela, a traditional flatbread from Romagnese, is part of the local food culture. In the past, it was baked in a wood-fired oven to check the temperature before baking bread. The annual BrĂĽsadela Festival takes place in late August and offers tastings with typical local wines. Check the dates before your trip. The Monte Penice Alpine Group Day is also celebrated every year on the last Sunday in July, with a Holy Mass and a social gathering.
