Rovescala combines a hilly setting in the small valley of the Bardonezza stream with architecture and events that range from the parish church to regional wine culture. If you’re looking for hotels in Rovescala, it’s worth keeping your travel dates and the themes of your stay in mind: events add their own highlights, while the landscape, architecture and archaeological finds shape the character of the area regardless.

Hilly Setting and Views

Rovescala lies in a hilly setting in the small valley of the Bardonezza stream. Another distinctive landscape feature is Castello di Luzzano: it stands at an altitude of 270 metres on the ridge separating the provinces of Piacenza and Pavia in the Oltrepò Pavese. Its location at the foot of the first hills offers wide views over the valleys below and the Po Valley. The valley and ridge thus offer contrasting perspectives on the landscape. If you enjoy taking in the scenery, you can use this contrast to guide the themes you choose for your stay.

Church and Archaeological Traces

The Parrocchiale della NativitĂ  di Maria Vergine is an 18th-century church with a single nave. A single-nave layout means the church is arranged around one main nave, with three chapels on each side. Exterior access stairs lead to the ground-floor level. The church therefore has a clearly defined layout of a main nave, six side chapels and an exterior entrance.

Archaeology reveals another layer of history. In 1961, Lombard graves belonging to four men who lived in the 7th century were discovered in the village of Luzzano. Grave goods included a scramasax, swords, shields and spearheads. Castello di Luzzano also houses an archaeological museum in its old wine cellar, with finds from excavations conducted in 1995 and 1996. These dates refer to different events: 1961 is the year the graves were discovered, while 1995 and 1996 are the years of the excavations that yielded the museum’s finds. If you’d like to visit the museum during your stay, check in advance whether it is open to visitors.

Regional Cuisine and Wine Culture

A former 18th-century customs house is home to an inn and a restaurant serving regional specialties. DiVinAgosto is a specific example of the area’s culinary traditions: the festival took place in Rovescala from August 24 to 31, 2025, and focused on the food and wine culture of the Oltrepò Pavese. That year’s event featured traditional regional dishes such as “nos tond,” roast beef with Bonarda DOC, carne salada with Soncino and grilled tomino, served alongside selected wines from the Oltrepò.

Primavera dei Vini, also known as the Festa del Bonarda, adds a seasonal dimension to trip planning: it is held every Sunday in March from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Check the dates for the year you plan to visit. For Primavera 2026, the region’s wineries were expected to open their doors to visitors so they could discover different expressions of the wine. For future editions, it’s also worth checking which wineries are taking part.

The two events take place at very different times: Primavera is held on Sundays in March, while the 2025 edition of DiVinAgosto took place from August 24 to 31. If you’d like to plan your trip around an event, check the dates for the edition you want to attend.
