Vimercate combines cultural history with gardens, landscapes and seasonal festivals. If you are looking for a hotel in Vimercate, these different highlights can help you tailor your stay to your interests. The cultural offerings range from the collections at the MUST to historic churches, bridges and villas; the natural setting can be seen in the parks and in the Parco Locale di interesse sovracomunale del Molgora.

The MUST and Historic Buildings

The MUST collections include archaeological finds, historical and art-historical works, videos, and oral accounts. Different forms of remembering and collecting are represented side by side: material finds, works, and recorded or orally transmitted stories. The MUST officially opened to the public on November 12, 2010.

Vimercate’s architectural history also spans different periods. The Collegiata di Santo Stefano is documented from the 8th century; the present building dates from the 10th century. The Santuario della Beata Vergine del Rosario is a Baroque building that was rebuilt in the 17th century. The Oratorio di Sant’Antonio dates from the Visconti period, while the Ponte di San Rocco is a Roman bridge with medieval fortifications.

The Casino di Caccia Borromeo reveals distinct periods in its architectural and decorative history: the building was constructed in the 14th century, while the surviving fresco cycle dates from the 15th century. The frescoes, in the International Gothic style, depict hunting scenes and scenes of courtly love. Villa Gallarati Scotti was designed by Simone Cantoni. Palazzo Trotti brings architecture and civic use together: built in the Barocchetto style between the 17th and 18th centuries, it has been the seat of the municipal administration since 1862.

Villas, Gardens and Landscapes

Villa Sottocasa is Neoclassical. Its Giardino all’inglese was redesigned in the 19th century in the Romantic style of the English garden. Its botanical features include valuable plant species from different parts of the world; the garden also provides a habitat for birds and wild animals. The garden design also includes an artificial grotto built from large blocks of clastic rock. The Coffee House was intended as a pavilion where visitors could rest and refresh themselves during walks.

Another garden highlight is the Baroque Ninfeo del Nettuno in the park of Villa Gallarati Scotti. This feature and Villa Sottocasa’s Giardino all’inglese represent different approaches to garden design: a Baroque garden feature here, and the Romantic redesign of an English garden in the 19th century there.

Vimercate is part of the Parco Locale di interesse sovracomunale del Molgora. The park stretches along the Molgora and Molgoretta waterways through remaining wooded areas and surrounding farmland. Parco di Oreno also has a trail for bicycles and roller skates. In this way, the landscape and opportunities for outdoor activity complement the city’s historical attractions without being equated with any single building.

Festivals and Practical Information

Consider these two long-standing festivals when planning your trip. Held in January, the Sagra di Sant’Antonio features traditional tortelli. In September, the Sagra della Patata includes food stalls and historical reenactments. Before your trip, check the event dates and the program for each festival.

The Infopoint Vimercate offers guided tours and sightseeing walks for individuals and groups; check in advance for current arrangements.
