Discover Ornago through two distinctive aspects: the Boscone di Ornago as a natural area, and the town’s churches, chapels and historic sites. Walking and mountain biking routes are also among the options described. If you are looking for a hotel in Ornago, this overview will help you see which themes could shape your stay—from the landscape of Parco P.A.N.E. to the history of its sacred buildings.

Oak Forest and Natural Area

The Boscone di Ornago is a rare lowland oak forest covering 12 hectares in the heart of Parco P.A.N.E. It is a habitat of great ecological and landscape value. The Boscone also includes a wetland: it has an entrance on Via Roncello in Ornago and is connected directly to the Boscone’s main path by a more clearly marked trail.

Another woodland complex is known as the “ex sanatorio di Ornago.” In 2023, work was carried out there under an agreement to enhance the coniferous forest’s natural features. The work focused on enhancing this coniferous forest, making it another chapter in Ornago’s landscape history.

On Foot and by Mountain Bike

The Cammino di Sant'Agostino heads west from Ornago. The route first passes through Parco del Rio Vallone, then through Parco del Molgora. This sequence defines the route described: Ornago is the starting point, with the two parks lying one after the other to the west.

The “In MTB nei parchi della Brianza” mountain bike route offers a different perspective. It starts at Gessate metro station, passes through Parco del Rio Vallone and reaches Ornago. The two routes therefore differ in their starting points and courses: the Cammino heads west from Ornago through two parks, while the mountain bike route runs from Gessate via Rio Vallone to Ornago. Check the route conditions before setting out.

Churches and Chapels

The Chiesa di Sant'Agata combines a long history with a clearly described interior layout. Its history dates back to before the 16th century; in 1908, it was consecrated by Blessed Cardinal Carlo Ferrari. Three aisles, separated by columns, divide the church interior. Numerous frescoes depict episodes from the lives of the saints. At Sant'Agata, both the historical period and the interior layout and subject matter of the artwork are therefore central.

The Cappella Verri houses the remains of Pietro Verri and members of his family. Frescoes by Francesco Corneliani adorn the chapel; the subjects depicted include “The Return of the Prodigal Son.”

The history of the Cappella dell'Addolorata is also linked to a former cemetery: the building was constructed as a cemetery in 1777. Later, it sheltered a mass grave dug outside the church and the town from the elements.

Historic Buildings and Visitor Information

Villa Carlotta is part of the Cascina Borella complex west of Ornago and has three above-ground floors. The Sanatorium of Ornago opened in 1910 to treat tuberculosis and was abandoned in the 1970s. The Chiesa del Sanatorio was built in the early 1920s in the Neo-Romanesque style. Together, these sites offer insight into different building and usage histories, which do not all belong to the same period.

The Santuario della Beata Vergine del Lazzaretto is accessible to people with disabilities. The Anfiteatro di Via Carlo Porta is an outdoor space open to everyone. Two festivals are celebrated at the Santuario: on the second Sunday after Easter and on the second Sunday in October. If you are travelling to Ornago for one of these festivals, check the dates of the events.
