Vaiano Cremasco can be understood through its landscape history, archaeological traces and striking buildings. Il Moso points to a former marshland; Villa Vimercati Sanseverino and the Chiesa dei Santi Cornelio e Cipriano tell different chapters of the town’s history. A municipal swimming pool, cultural facilities and a cycling link to the Parco Agricolo del Moso add to the things to explore during your stay.

Il Moso: A Changing Landscape

Il Moso was once the largest marshland in the Cremasco area. Its drainage began in 1890 with the construction of the Canale Marzano and was completed only with the opening of the Canale Vacchelli. This sequence places the landscape’s transformation in the context of two canal projects. At the same time, Il Moso provides a habitat for many animal and plant species that have become rare in the surrounding area. The former marshland and its present-day ecological role are therefore two distinct aspects of the same area.

There is also a specific connection to the landscape for cycling: a provincial cycle path runs along the Canale Vacchelli and makes it easier to access and explore the Parco Agricolo del Moso. If you are planning a visit to Vaiano Cremasco with a focus on landscape and cycling, this link to the park is a useful point of reference.

Villa and Parish Church: Local Architectural History

Villa Vimercati Sanseverino stands in the locality of “Vaianello.” It was once a fortified residence of the noble Benzoni family. It was probably built toward the end of the 16th century or in the first half of the 17th century. Its architectural features include four corner towers that project slightly from the walls. The western section includes an Italian garden, where the hedges form spirals and mazes. The villa thus brings together fortified architecture and a landscaped garden as distinct features.

The Chiesa dei Santi Cornelio e Cipriano has its own historical timeline. In 1566, it was recorded as a parish in the Diocese of Piacenza. The church was completely rebuilt between 1687 and 1710 and consecrated on May 10, 1717. One of its side altars also features Titian’s painting “Incoronazione di spine.” Its record as a parish, the later rebuilding and the painting each offer a different point of interest for exploring the church.

Archaeological Traces of Early Settlement

Vaiano Cremasco is considered one of the oldest prehistoric settlement sites in Lombardy. Remains of pile dwellings were discovered in Vaiano Cremasco during excavation work on the Canale Vacchelli. A small stone vessel and a bronze lance were also found in the area. The bronze lance probably dates from a considerably later period.
