Gerre De' Caprioli: Po floodplains and historic village center
Accommodation in Gerre De' Caprioli
The area around Gerre De' Caprioli is still largely occupied by the Po’s floodplains. The destination is also characterized by its historic village center, Piarda Guidotti on the river, and activities in Parco del Po e del Morbasco.
Floodplains and landscape
In the broader regional context, Parco del Po e del Morbasco lies in the Po floodplain and includes the Morbasco, Cerca, and Morta waterways. Along the Morta, the park contains a stand of reeds that is unique to the Cremona plain. Of the waterways mentioned, the Morta is therefore the reference point for a particularly notable habitat. Within the park, Spiaggia della Luna covers around 30 hectares. Alongside the extensive floodplain landscape, visitors can thus explore a specific natural habitat and the area of a named part of the park.
Village center and farmstead architecture
Gerre De' Caprioli is the historic village center and the municipality’s original seat; it consists mainly of farmsteads. Cascina Bugatti is one of the significant examples of the Lombard architectural tradition of enclosed farm complexes, built from the 17th century onward. An enclosed farm complex can be understood as a group of buildings arranged around a courtyard. This makes the courtyard’s structure understandable as an architectural motif, in addition to the individual buildings.
Piarda Guidotti on the Po
Piarda Guidotti lies on the Po’s left bank at a scenic viewpoint. The former piarda has been transformed into a public place for meeting and recreation. The “Cristo del Po” monument is located at the piarda, with the Big Bench nearby. From the Big Bench, visitors can admire the beauty of the landscape on the opposite bank from a new perspective. The piarda is also a place for people who come ashore from river cruises. The funnel-shaped structures there have also been redesigned for public recreational use.
Cycle path and activities in the park
The Golena del Po cycle path runs through Parco del Po e del Morbasco from Cremona toward Stagno Lombardo. The park also offers opportunities for walking, and horseback riding is another visitor activity. At the edge of the park, the Bugatti equestrian center is located at the Cascina of the same name. A Sunday street market is also associated with the park. When planning your visit, note that the activities have different focuses: the cycle path has a named route, while walking and horseback riding offer further ways to enjoy the park. The market adds a Sunday outing beyond sports.
Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Gioacchino al Bosco
The entrance to Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Gioacchino al Bosco is on the ground floor and has no architectural barriers. Check whether access is currently possible before your visit.
