Cansero is of interest to travelers who want to consider the town’s historic character and its waterscape when choosing a hotel. The Ciria watercourse, along with the history of the Ciria Nuova and Ciria Vecchia canals, gives the town several distinct historical connections. For those searching for hotels in Cansero, this local history provides a concrete point of reference when choosing where to stay.

Historic center and ecclesiastical history

The municipal plan identifies Cansero as one of the historic settlement centers considered to be of historical and ecological significance and to be enhanced in order to preserve the area’s historical memory. The built-up parts of the town are considered to have remained almost unchanged since the Teresian Cadastre of 1723 and the first IGM survey of 1888. For travelers interested in historic townscapes, this long period of comparison makes Cansero’s historic character tangible.

A plan drawn up between 1770 and 1790 documents a church, a rectory, and a farmhouse in Cansero owned by the Congregazione di Carità. These three types of buildings offer insight into the town’s historic architecture and link its ecclesiastical and agricultural heritage. The plan dates from a different period than the comparison points of 1723 and 1888, adding a specific architectural record to the longer history of the settlement center.

The ecclesiastical history also stretches back a long way: the parish of San Michele is documented in 1385 in the Liber Synodalium and is mentioned in 1404 in the Rationes Censum et Decimarum. A later development concerned the parish of Cansero: by decree dated July 17, 1986, it was united with the parish of Santa Maria Assunta in Pozzo Baronzio. The early mentions and the later union are separate chapters in this history.

The church of San Michele Arcangelo had been closed since early 2012 because it was unusable. Check whether it is currently open to visitors before going.

The Ciria, canals, and getting around

The Ciria, also known as the Siria or Seriola, flows through the area around Cansero. Another historic waterway is the Ciria Nuova canal, which continues as the Ciria Vecchia. Carlo Ciria, from the noble family of the same name, had this canal system extended or built in the second half of the 16th century.

The waters of the Ciria Vecchia once powered the mills at Motta and Cicognolo. This former use adds a practical aspect to the canal’s history: the water served not only the landscape but also the operation of mills. The historical story of the waterways therefore encompasses both the expansion of the canal system and its former use.

For getting around the municipal area, Provincial Road 29 (Cicognolo–Isola Dovarese) runs from west to east. It connects Cappella de' Picenardi with Cansero to the east.
