Discover Vesio: Church, Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Vesio
Vesio brings together religious architecture and festival traditions with hiking and cycling routes. When looking for a hotel for a stay in Vesio, your planned activities can be a good starting point: San Bartolomeo and local festival days appeal to travellers interested in church art and traditions; the routes vary in walking time, elevation gain and scenery.
San Bartolomeo Church and Religious Traditions
San Bartolomeo Church is the parish church of Vesio and dates from the second half of the 18th century. It was completed in 1768 with the construction of an organ by Venetian organ builder Gaetano Callido. The high altar features a painting of Saint Bartholomew and Saint Roch.
The tradition of the Sante Quarantore is celebrated in Vesio during the week after Easter. A painted wooden structure with lit candles is set up on the high altar. Vesio’s patron saint’s day is celebrated on 24 August; the specific programme may vary. Church art and festival traditions therefore offer different points of interest if you would like to include cultural themes in your travel plans.
Hiking around Vesio
The Muravalle Trail, Route 167, branches off from the paved road connecting Vesio di Tremosine with Passo Nota. After about two hours of walking and 500 metres of elevation gain, the trail reaches the Alpini di Vesio refuge near Passo Nota. It is located 1,208 metres above sea level. The walking time is an estimate and depends on conditions.
The eight-hour circular hike to Malga Lorina begins about one kilometre beyond the hamlet of Vesio, at the junction for San Michele. It runs mostly through the forest managed by the western Gardesana Regional Forestry Authority in Parco Alto Garda Bresciano. Beech, hornbeam, ash and maple trees characterise the forest along the route. The trail follows and crosses a stream several times; small waterfalls and a few pools are also part of the scenery. Compared with the hike to the Alpini refuge, the Malga Lorina loop is a considerably longer excursion, taking eight hours.
The nearby Bondo Valley was designated a nature reserve in 1980. Access to the Corna Vecchia Trail is above Vesio, near the road to Passo Nota. After about an hour, the trail joins Route 106. For a cycling trip, the “Bike Tour - Passo Nota dagli Alpini” starts and ends in Vesio, in the hamlet of Pertica.
Historic Sites and Getting Around
In the area around Passo Nota, visitors can see a preserved command post for a subsection, the well-known concrete trench, as well as trenches, infirmaries and military barracks near the Rifugio Alpini di Vesio. The visible structures remain in good condition. Check local access conditions before your visit.
