Paladina: Churches, a Villa and Medieval Streets
Accommodation in Paladina
Paladina lies on a terrace between the left bank of the Brembo River and the ridge rising from Monte di Sombreno towards Bergamo Alta. The town is also at the foot of the Valle Brembana. Its compact historic centre is crisscrossed by narrow medieval streets. When looking for a hotel in Paladina, you can use this geographical location and the town’s historic layout as two distinct points of reference for planning your trip.
Historic Traces in the Town Centre
The first document to mention Paladina dates from 856 and refers to the construction of the Chiesa Parrocchiale di Sant'Alessandro. The parish church is one of the oldest churches in the Bergamo area. On Piazzetta S. Rocco, there is also a small chapel dating from the 16th century. The dates are far apart: the early reference to Paladina is linked to the construction of the parish church, while the chapel dates from several centuries later.
Churches and the Santuario di Sombreno
The Santuario di Sombreno stands on a scenic green hill. A medieval castle once stood on the hill, but it has since disappeared. The sanctuary was formed by the union of two churches: one dedicated to the Natività di Maria and the other to the Madonna Addolorata. The Chiesa dell’Addolorata within the sanctuary dates from 1493.
Villa Pesenti Agliardi and Its Garden Design
Villa Pesenti Agliardi, a historic residence dating from the 17th century, is located in Sombreno di Paladina. Its original garden design envisaged a monumental garden with symbolic elements and buildings inspired by antiquity. The plan names the Tempietto del Silenzio, the Fontana della Najade, an obelisk and the Casa dell’Ortolano, inspired by Pompeii. The design thus combines the idea of a monumental garden with named individual structures and an explicitly antiquity-inspired style.
Route and Practical Information
A path of ascending steps leads from Villa Pesenti Agliardi to the Santuario di Sombreno. Along the way are votive chapels, which lead to a panoramic platform at the religious complex. The route described thus connects the residence with the sanctuary and also specifies the form of the path: an uphill staircase with chapels along the way.
