Chiuduno lies on the southern slopes of Monte Santo Stefano. The character of the town can be explored from two perspectives: the landscape around the Valle del Fico, and its churches and historic buildings. Architectural history, the shape of the landscape and a named trail offer different topics to consider when planning your trip.

Landscape in Chiuduno

The Valle del Fico is a natural amphitheatre shaped by woodland and agricultural land. The terrain and its various uses define the character of this landscape. Those interested in the scenery will find a different way to explore Chiuduno here than through its religious buildings: the Valle del Fico is also home to a complex of rural buildings with a small church. Natural surroundings and the built environment thus sit side by side in this named valley.

Churches and architectural history

An imposing bell tower stands beside Chiuduno’s parish church. It was built entirely from dressed stone between 1745 and 1755. Its construction dates and material are among the building’s distinctive features.

The construction history of the Chiesa parrocchiale Santa Maria Assunta can be placed in a specific timeframe: work began in 1710, and the building was completed in 1732. Inside, the church consists of a central nave and two side aisles. The building’s chronology and the layout of its interior are two distinct aspects.

The Chiesa di San Michele probably dates from the 10th or 11th century. At the centre of the interior is an altarpiece depicting the Assumption, dating from 1652. Its presumed early origins and the dated altarpiece belong to different periods. Castello di Chiuduno is also part of the town’s historic character: it stands on elevated ground above the San Michele district, considered the oldest part of the settlement.

Buildings with different features

Cascina Suardo, in the Monte di Chiuduno area, dates from the 16th century and has exposed natural-stone walls. Different architectural features stand out at Palazzo Suardo di Cicola: the building dates from the 18th century and has a U-shaped floor plan, a portico and loggias. The floor plan describes the building’s layout, while the portico and loggias are further elements of its architecture. The two buildings can therefore be considered through different details: at the Cascina, these are chiefly its age and visible natural-stone masonry; at the Palazzo, its floor plan and architectural design.

Routes and historic road alignments

A road to Brescia ran through Chiuduno. Before the year 1000, its route had already been moved from the ancient Roman road, away from the valley floor and into the higher foothills. These details relate to the historic development of transport routes and settlement. The named Sentiero 798 runs from Chiuduno to Boca di Senter. Historic changes to a road’s route and a trail with explicitly named starting and ending points thus represent distinct aspects of the town’s history.
