Bonate Sopra: Landscape and Architectural History
Accommodation in Bonate Sopra
Bonate Sopra combines a broad, flat landscape with a historic town center and a variety of cultural themes. When planning your stay, you can explore the geological features of the plain, the architectural history of the center and individual places to visit, such as the Chiesetta di San Geminiano. The Mercato Agricolo and the Filagosto Festival also offer specific options to consider when planning your trip.
Landscape and Local History
The flat landscape formed during the Würm glaciation, when meltwater flowed from glacier tongues. The Lesina stream runs through the Bonate Sopra area, east of the built-up area. The broad plain and the stream can thus be understood as two distinct features of the local landscape.
Buildings with herringbone masonry made from river pebbles, reinforced with sandstone blocks, can be found in the historic center. The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta has been documented there since the 9th century. This early reference sits alongside later buildings that reveal other periods and functions.
The Casaforte Prezzati is a fortified house dating from the 14th century. Its features include loopholes and a portal made of Mapello stone. The Palazzo Maggioni, by contrast, is a former Baroque monastery dating from the 17th century. Differences in construction date and building type give the town center several historical points of reference, rather than reducing it to a single era.
The surviving farmsteads add to this picture. Their layout recalls former areas used to store “stami,” farm equipment or a wine press. There are also threshing floors and large areas for processing and storing wine. These details point to agricultural uses, distinct from the religious and fortified architecture.
Chiesetta di San Geminiano
The Chiesetta di San Geminiano is a rural church on the right bank of the Brembo. An archaeological site is located beside the church and can be reached via a flat, unpaved path. People with limited mobility can also use the path, preferably accompanied. Admission to the Chiesetta is free. If you plan a visit, take into account both the unpaved surface and the recommendation to be accompanied.
Another religious point of interest is the parish chapel of Ghiaie di Bonate: on 13 February 2019, the Diocese of Bergamo announced the approval of the cult of “Maria Regina della Famiglia.” The chapel and the Chiesetta di San Geminiano are two separate places, each with its own associations.
Festival, Market and Cycling Route
The Filagosto Festival has been an independent music festival since 2003. It features an in-house kitchen and a selection of craft breweries from the Bergamo area. If you would like to combine your trip with the festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.
The Mercato Agricolo di Bonate Sopra is held on the fourth Saturday of months with five Saturdays. In 2026, products can be purchased on these market days in Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II in Bonate Sopra. If the market is important to your plans, check the specific date before your trip.
Another option is the Roncola di Treviolo–Bonate Sopra route, designated for both cycling and walking. It is marked as suitable for mountain bikes, gravel bikes, touring bikes and city bikes. As the route information is older, check the current conditions before setting out.
