Accommodation in Alzano Lombardo
In Alzano Lombardo, sacred art, industrial history and a variety of routes come together. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus mainly on churches and art, the history of natural cement, or cycling and hiking routes.
Church Art and Local History
The building project for the Basilica di San Martino was entrusted to Gerolamo Quadrio. Work began in 1659 and continued throughout the following century. The interior is divided into three naves. The central vault is decorated with stuccowork by the Sala workshop; the central bays contain paintings by Pier Paolo Raggi depicting the miracles of Saint Martin. Twelve frescoes by Giuseppe Pozzi depict scenes of martyrdom.
The Museo d’Arte Sacra San Martino is housed in the former Palazzo Pelliccioli, an elegant 17th-century building. The museum and the Basilica, with its three sacristies, house works by artists including Tintoretto, Palma il Vecchio, Palma il Giovane, Piazzetta, Cignaroli, Fantoni and Caniana. Architecture, frescoes and works by different artists thus offer distinct aspects of sacred art.
Olera also offers several points of interest for exploring local history and culture. The village has three churches; the oldest is dedicated to SS. TrinitĂ e tutti i Santi and is also known as Chiesa dei morti. The parish church of San Bartolomeo preserves a 15th-century polyptych by Cima da Conegliano. A study centre dedicated to Fra Tommaso da Olera collects paintings and sculptures about the friar. The Santa Maria della Pace complex dates back to 1520 and bears witness to the presence of the Franciscans in the Bergamo area.
Industrial History at the Cementificio
The former Cementificio Italcementi is a rare, almost intact example of a natural cement production workshop. The Pesenti brothers built and modified the complex between 1833 and 1966; the kilns were decommissioned in 1966. The site represents a different side of local history from the churches and art collections.
The former Cementificio can only be viewed from the outside or on specific occasions. Visits can be arranged by prior reservation through Gruppo Tironi. Coordinate your plans with Gruppo Tironi before you arrive.
Cycling Along the Serio
The Ciclovia delle Rogge runs through Alzano Centro and Alzano Sopra along the Roggia Seriola. Flowers, historical photographs, art installations and murals bring the route to life. The footpath and cycle path along the Serio River runs below the built-up area of Alzano and along the boundary with the municipality of Villa di Serio.
The direction of travel is also useful when navigating the Serio path: follow it to reach Bergamo and the municipalities along the route; there is also a branch to Gorle and Seriate. In the opposite direction, the path extends as far as Clusone and the upper Val Seriana. The path therefore offers two different directions, while the Ciclovia delle Rogge has its own distinctive character, with its art and historical photographs.
Hiking Routes and Elevation Profiles
Route 540A reaches a maximum elevation of about 900 metres, with an elevation gain of approximately 375 metres. Il percorso del Lupo is about 9.8 kilometres long and has an elevation gain of about 640 metres. According to CAI signs, the route takes approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes. Trail conditions and signage on Il percorso del Lupo may change; check the information before setting out.
The two routes can be compared using different planning details: the maximum elevation and elevation gain are given for route 540A, while Il percorso del Lupo also has a stated distance and approximate duration. On route 540A, you cross trail 533; continuing to the left, you can reach Canto Alto via trail 507. The routes therefore differ not only in the elevation figures provided, but also in the described continuation.
Parco Montecchio and Brumano
Parco Montecchio is the largest public park in the municipality of Alzano. It contains more than 40 tree species, with almost 400 specimens in total. The park includes tennis courts, a bocce court, the headquarters of the Alzano CAI subsection, the municipal library and a municipal auditorium. Nature, sports and cultural facilities are therefore all found within the same park.
The hilltop settlement of Brumano is accessible only on foot: via a road open only to authorised vehicles, a mule track or hiking trails. Check local access information before you arrive. The Chiesa della Trasfigurazione in Brumano preserves an old Serassi organ and its original sandstone portal. It is also a stop on the Cammino delle Sorelle, which connects Bergamo and Brescia.
By comparing these different highlights, you will find sacred art, an example of industrial history, and routes for cycling and hiking in Alzano Lombardo. The specific access information for the former Cementificio and Brumano can help you distinguish between these destinations as you plan your trip.
