Vendone is situated on a mid-slope in the Valle Arroscia, on hills shaped by olive groves in the hinterland of Albenga. The municipal area extends from about 200 metres above sea level to the summit of Monte Castell’Ermo at 1,094 metres. This range in altitude shapes the transition between Mediterranean vegetation and higher-altitude landscapes; nature and cultural experiences go hand in hand in Vendone.

A Landscape of Valleys and Olive Groves

Typical Mediterranean vegetation grows in the lower part of Vendone, while the higher areas feature deciduous forests and meadows with a mountain character. The difference in altitude is also reflected in the landscape: the lower elevations have a Mediterranean character, while further uphill, forests and meadows define the scenery.

Numerous terraces with traditional dry-stone walls are cultivated with olive groves. The vegetation changes with altitude, while the terraces and dry-stone walls shape the cultivated landscape of olive growing. In Vendone, natural altitudinal zones and cultivated slopes are distinct landscape features side by side.

Monte Castell’Ermo, also known as Peso Grande, lies on the ridge separating the Valle Arroscia from the Valle Pennavaire. Both names refer to the same mountain; its position on the dividing ridge places it between the valleys.

The area is recognised by the European Union as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and is home to several endemic animal and plant species of particular interest. This recognition and its species add to the picture of a landscape shaped equally by its altitudinal zones, olive growing and nature.

Medieval Traces and Other Sights

In the hamlet of Castellaro, you can see the remains of the medieval Castello di Clavesana, which is open to visitors. A nearly intact, approximately 25-metre-high hexagonal tower survives; it served as a prison. Its shape, height and former function make it a distinctive feature of the complex, combining architectural and historical interest.

In Vendone, the Chiesa di S. Calogero dates from the 16th century. In Curenna, fortified houses stand high above the steep gorge of the Rio Paraone. The two places offer different historical points of interest: a church in Vendone and fortified houses above a gorge.

The Parco Rainer Kriester in Torre (hamlet of Castellaro) was officially reopened to the public on 8 August 2026. Please check access again for travel dates after that.
