Vado Ligure: Art, Churches and Coast
Accommodation in Vado Ligure
Vado Ligure brings together several practical starting points for planning your trip: art collections, historic churches, the sea, a protected area, and direct ferry connections. There is also the approximately six-kilometre-long Savona–Vado Ligure cycle path. If you are looking for a hotel in Vado Ligure, you can first decide whether culture, the sea, or continuing your journey by ferry is your priority.
Artworks and Collections
The Civico Museo archeologico Arturo Martini displays original plaster and terracotta works by sculptor Arturo Martini. The original plaster works include La Gloria, La Vittoria, Il Sacrificio and La Storia; Il Cieco and Il Benefattore are in terracotta. The museum also displays contemporary paintings and sculptures from the Premio Vado art competition, which ran from 1951 to 1963. The collection thus spans Martini’s named works and a competition series of paintings and sculptures from a clearly defined period. If you choose art as your focus, you will find both individual works and the historical context of a competition here.
Villa Groppallo and Churches
Villa Groppallo was built by Nicolò Firpo in 1693. In 1982, the Comune opened the building to the public as a multicultural centre with an art gallery and municipal library. The dates mark two distinct chapters: its construction and its later cultural use. Villa Groppallo thus adds another historical perspective to the focus on art.
The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista preserves a painting of the Transit of Saint Joseph from the 18th-century Genoese school of painting, as well as Domenico Bocciardo’s depiction of the Presentation in the Temple, dated 1720. One work is associated with the 18th-century Genoese school of painting; the other is linked to the year 1720.
The Chiesa San Maurizio – Segno dates back to the 10th century; in 1711, it was rebuilt in Baroque forms. It preserves an Annunciation attributed to Cambiaso, Barabino’s Baptism of Christ, and a wooden crucifix attributed to Maragliano. Its early origins and Baroque reconstruction thus belong to distinct chapters in the church’s history.
The Chiesa di Nostra Signora della Visitazione, also known as Madonna delle Grazie, stands directly opposite the sea and the fishermen’s beach. A rural oratory built in 1634 was dedicated to Madonna delle Grazie.
Sea, Protected Area and Cycle Path
The Zone Speciale di Conservazione IT1323203 Rocca dei Corvi – Mao – Mortou is located in the Vado Ligure area. Its code and name provide a specific reference for the protected area. The sea near Vado Ligure is generally clear and suitable for swimming. If you plan to swim, check the conditions locally.
The Savona–Vado Ligure cycle path is about six kilometres long, flat and easy to access.
