Varazze combines a historic center with archaeological sites, cycling and hiking opportunities, and activities on the water. If you are looking for a hotel in Varazze, you can start by considering which aspects of the town are especially interesting for your trip: its Ligurian-style lanes, the history of the surrounding area, or a stay filled with outdoor activity.

Getting Here and Getting Oriented

Varazze can be reached via the Varazze exit on the A10 Genoa–Ventimiglia motorway and via the SS1 Aurelia state road. The Aurelia connects Varazze with Celle Ligure and Cogoleto. The train station is another useful point of reference when planning your journey: it is on the Genoa–Ventimiglia railway line and is served by regional and fast regional trains. There are frequent connections to Genoa, Savona, and Milan. As timetables and connections may change, check train times before you travel.

In the historic center, caruggi (narrow lanes), colorful facades, and a typically Ligurian atmosphere shape the townscape. You can easily combine a stroll around town with a visit to the Collegiata di Sant’Ambrogio: its Romanesque-Gothic tower dates back to the 14th century. Varazze is also the birthplace of Jacopo da Varagine, author of the Legenda Aurea. In the town center, you can encounter both striking architectural history and a connection to medieval literature.

Archaeology and History

In Alpicella, a hamlet in the municipality of Varazze, the La strada Megalitica follows a paved path past beech trees, stone walls, and trilithic structures. The Esposizione Archeologica Permanente “Mario Fenoglio” offers another perspective on prehistory. It displays finds from excavations carried out between 1979 and 1987 at Fenestrelle (Rocca Due Teste) and Alpicella. For schools and families, the exhibition organizes educational workshops where prehistoric artifacts such as statuettes and jewelry are recreated. This offers two different ways to explore archaeological themes: a path with visible stone structures and a closer look at excavated objects.

The festival calendar also has a regular date: Varazze celebrates its patron saint, Santa Caterina, every year on April 30 with a religious festival. If you include culture and local history in your travel plans, you can consider this annual event alongside the attractions described as available year-round.

Trails, Landscapes, and Activity

The Parco del Beigua is a UNESCO Global Geopark. Its territory has a dense network of hiking trails extending for about 500 kilometers. This figure refers to the park and gives you an idea of the range of hiking opportunities in the region. The Varazze Trail Area also has more than 70 mountain bike and e-bike routes. For a road cycling trip on paved surfaces, the Ciclovia del Beigua is another option: the 78-kilometer route connects Cogoleto, Varazze, Stella, and Sassello.

The distances show how varied the options are: at the Eremo del Deserto di Varazze, a botanical loop trail covers almost 2.5 kilometers. Along the way, you will encounter Mediterranean species, typical mountain forest trees, and numerous ornamental plants from Europe and beyond. The Ciclovia del Beigua, at 78 kilometers, is a much longer cycling route between four towns. When planning, you can choose between a short loop with botanical sights and a longer route passing through several towns, without confusing the two options.

Activities by the Sea

Water sports and marine experiences are also part of what Varazze has to offer. The surf wave is known for being powerful and barrel-shaped. Founded in 1919, the Varazze Club Nautico and the Lega Navale Italiana promote sailing courses, regattas, and inclusive activities for all age groups. Every year, trips with marine biologists depart from the coast to the protected Santuario Pelagos marine protected area. So, as well as sporting activities, the program includes excursions with a focus on nature.

Varazze therefore offers a range of options to suit different travel interests: historic lanes and architecture in the center, archaeological sites in Alpicella, trails of varying lengths, and activities on the water. You can weigh up which ones suit your travel plans by considering the specific activities and their respective scale.
